A man was killed this morning on northbound I-196 in Allegan County when the tractor-semitrailer he was driving overturned and caught fire, police said.
The accident occurred about 2:52 a.m. just south of 109th Avenue, according to a news release from the Allegan County Sheriff's Department.
Police said the truck was northbound on I-196 when it ran off the highway, overturned and spilled its cargo -- molten aluminum with a temperature of 1,200 degrees.
Firefighters from the South Haven Fire Department were the first to respond to the accident. Authorities said the truck was engulfed in flames when they arrived.
Firefighters were able to put out the blaze. Police said the body of the driver was found in the wreckage after the fire was extinguished.
The name of the driver was not released this morning, pending the notification of next of kin.
Police said the truck was registered to Chicago-based Allied Metal Co.

Large casting operations suchj those run by Briggs & Stratton and most auto makers simply use too much metal to make it affordable to remelt it prior to casting. They recieve 24/7/365 shipments of molten to keep the casting lines rolling.Originally posted by dubu
