Tony did not get it; he was alive when the screen went blank. He is TV's "Teflon Don." He can buy his way out of anything....including the impending conviction.
To me, the show was ok, up until the last 10 mins...which sucked. I'm glad that Phil got whacked (and run over by the SUV). It it funny that AJ seems to be at peace with himself (I just wish that he was actually getting laid when he noticed the fire). Paulie has a new friend in the cat (The last scene when the cat sits next to him outside the pork store).
Nothing really exciting. HBO will have to deal with massive cancellations.
Basically, Chase let everyone down. Not much thought put into the finale.
I would have liked to see "The Saint Valentine's Day Massacre," instead, I got "Breakfast at Tiffany's".

    Nice car AJ....you spoiled fuck!

    for all you whiners
    what did you expect?
to quote the great philosopher stump in another Sopranos thread
The focus of this show has never been organized crime, warring families, and people getting whacked. Its a show about an father with essentially two lives, dealing with fairly common problems (mid-life crises, kids with no direction, work pressures), and how he lets decisions in one aspect of his life affect the other. The mafia aspect adds some tension and adds some depth to the conflicts, but the real meat of the show is in Tony's sessions with Melfi, and how he chooses to face his problems.

If you can't grasp this nuance, you might want to stick to simpler TV fare, like American Idol. I heard they do a great job of setting up conflict and resolving it in the next episode.
the charecters are who the are.
this episode confirmed that from AJ's "carreer" decisions to Paulie's Virgin mary visions, to Meadow playing dad like a violin with her "italian streotype" justifications for Law school.

    that was pretty cool.

Personally I thought the whole episode was comedic.

Yup. looks like I'll finally be saving some money on my comcast bill

....that is until the Song of Ice and Fire series in a couple years

"Variety reported on January 17th, 2007 that the rights for A Song of Ice and Fire have been sold to HBO with the intent of turning the novels into a television series.[7] Written and executive produced by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the series is expected to cover one novel's worth of material per season. Martin plans to co-executive produce the series and is expected to write one episode per season. The series will be filmed in Europe or New Zealand." -wiki

I'd like to hear how the ending should have been from the people who hated the last episode. I think it would be difficult to make a better and more fitting end to the series than the one we saw yesterday.

I think it should have ended with Meadow and AJ's new girlfiend getting it on in the tub.

I'm fine with not resolving things for the sake of a better story, making it more true to life, whatever. The thing I don't like is that I feel like they avoid resolution for a lot of these types of shows just so they have the option to keep making sequels. That's annoying.

Last night, when the screen went black, at first I thought the DVR missed the ending, so I yelled "what the fuck." Then when the credits started rolling, I said the same thing.

After thinking about it for a bit, I now dig the ending. I am sure people will interpret it how they will, but I like the idea that that is pretty much the average day for a mobster and his family, and things will keep going on like they have for the past 6 seasons. I don't think he was shot (although that is a wicked cool interpretation too, and if that is what Chase intended, cooler than the way that I took it).

The cat is the thing that I keep thinking of. The scene with Paulie, his mirror, and the cat was freaking awesome.

BTW, I am not canceling my HBO. From the looks of it, they are rolling out many new shows that all look like they could have potential. Hope at least a couple of them are in the same realm as Deadwood/Sopranos/Rome.

I thought the ending was hysterical. I literally laughed out loud for minutes on end. Sure I was hoping for an ending that showed Tony as either Ultimate Don or dead. Just throwing the screen black with two very plausible outcomes was definitely interesting and effective. The thought of everyone collectively thinking their cable went out and then most of them getting pissed for the lack of closer are what really had me laughing.

With that said, I do think it is a cowardly, egotistical, copout for Chase (or any other artist) to just throw something up and leave it to viewer interpretation.

    I thought it was brilliant...

In hindsight, VERY brilliant. So many hidden meanings and possibilities. All the hints, from the cats to the birds (both in the poem AJ was obsessed about), to thinking that Tony got whacked at the end, with the flashback of Bobby saying he wondered what it was like, that it "just went black".

I also think the constant shots of other people in the diner were to fuel OUR paranoia, and Tony was Not really looking at those other people like we were.

The only thing I have NO idea about is why Tony flashed from walking into the Diner, to then almost "seeing himself" sitting down. I am at a loss there. Maybe because the whole show was through Tony's eyes, until that last scene where we then were given the chance to see it our own way(also feeding into OUR paranoia, not his)?

Who knows...either way, it was GREAT....

But it's true to the show. There's a shitload of storylines that are just hanging there from the show. You never know exactly how things ended, for instance with the much debated russian. So what if we don't have a ahppily ever after or everything goes to hell ending? Our view into the life of the family is now closed and life will continue as usual.

Well it's just not possible to tie up every loose end. There is really only one character/storyline that people want real answers to. Nobody, except possibly David Chase, knows the fate of Tony. People can debate it all they want, but in the end nobody knows, so the debate is pointless. I much prefer an artist to tell us what they intend and let us react to their point of view or their execution of the work. I thought the execution of the ending was brilliant, but I thought lack of an answer was a copout.

C'mon, don't take it so seriously. There was a lot of humor in that last episode - the cat and Paulie, the head squish, the BMW M3 (it's, like, 23MPG!)...So the final joke was on us. Life goes on.

    But not my HBO subscription.

It should have ended like the decade's other critically acclaimed epic depiction of good vs. evil, "Lord of the Rings," with everyone jumping up and down in Sil's hospital bed and hugging. But hey, whadda-ya-gonna-do.

I thought the guy going to the bathroom should have turned arround faced the Table and showed hand motions of reaching toward his coat or maybe just a sinister look. Then cut to Meadow enteriing the restraunt.

The more I think about it the more it's become clear that whether or not Tony lives, is insignificant ... what is significant though is that the legacy of his character lives on. Barring additional commentary on the DVD, we are left to ponder the ending for as long as we wish. But truth be told, our last vision of Tony is not of someone that was whisked away by the feds in handcuffs and it is not of someone who's brains were splattered at a German ice cream shop in front of his family. And for that, he will be held in much higher regard than otherwise.

The majority of respsonses I heard on the radio today were the same. "At first I hated it but the more I think about it, the better it was." It's liike a practical joke. At first you're pissed about the pie in the face, but later on you can laugh at yourself.

I think that's a big part of it. We've seen a lot of four bosses this season- Johnny Sack, Uncle Junior, Phil, and Tony. Three of those four guys aren't doing so well... I've been thinking of it as, this is a high point for Tony. New York is under control, with Phil gone and no real heir apparent; his kids are seemingly on the right track for now; Carmela has a new project that will keep her out of his hair; even his sister will be financially taken care of. But he's still constantly on guard, with every ring of the bell on the restaurant door, and it's only going to get worse- there's a 90% chance he'll be indicted, and probably an even better chance that he'll have a heart attack, the way he's scarfing down onion rings. I don't want to see Tony like that, and I'm sure David Chase doesn't, either, so the show ends now. We already know all the possible outcomes for Tony, and so does he. The wariness and tiredness on his face in the closing shot of the series reveals that awareness.

Saw it again, last night. This time with a bit of a buzz. I really liked the ending this time 'round. Tony was looking up as everyone entered. I took it to mean that he was being very cautious and a bit paranoid. Prolly out of habit. It didn't seem like there was ever a threat of a "hit" at the restaurant.

Anyone else catch the Little Feat song that was in there towards the end? I think it was "Time Loves a Hero"?
