Mountain Bike ?? (nsr)
so I have a question for anyone who knows a thing or two about mountain bikes.
REI has the 2004 K2 Attack 2.0 for $750, with my recent dividend check from REI and 20% off, the bike would be $400 for me.
Dual suspension and disc brakes are features I'm definitely looking for in a new bike. The fact that it is practically 35 pounds isn't so great, but for $750, what do you expect.
Anyways, my questions for maggots & minions, what are your experiences w/ K2 bikes? Are they pieces of crap or are they somewhat decent? I understand that it is a fairly cheap bike compared to the high end stuff, but then again I am only going to be riding it once or twice a week for the summer.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks

Looking through the components on that bike, I'd have to say pass. I dont know how hard you are planning on riding, but any serious hucking will destroy those shimano acera parts. I'd look into getting the best possible frame and rear shock, and I'd say that the K2 is not your best bet. But, if you are only going to spend 400 bucks and definately want FS and disc brakes, its going to be hard to get a bike at that pricepoint without some serious sacrifices for performance.
Would you consider buying used? For your pricepoint that might be your best bet. Check the classifieds at www.mtbr.com and www.pinkbike.com

Depends on what kind of riding you are thinking of doing. If you are looking to do some XC/DH with it, spend more money. If you are looking for transportation and a little bit of a cush ride, why not. But the parts that come with it are definitely on the lower end. Just my $.02

K2 frames are pretty durable. The components on that bike are no screaming hell but they could be replaced as you break them. For $400 bucks it is a decent entry level xc bike.

03-08-2004, 03:56 PM #5i knew a guy who was spancered by k2 about six years ago. he broke his bikes all the time, seemed like every time. he got em for free, and often. they may have stepped it up recently, but six years ago they were junk.Originally posted by Beaver

I dunno, I got mine of a sponored rider about 6 years ago and have beat it fairly hard with no troubles. It has outridden, on 2 occasions, 2 different Kona after they disintigrated on drops that I smoothed over.

I'm happy with mine - I've got a Tirade 4.0
only complaint I have is the top tube is too short for it to be a decent trail bike. Guess I need to throw on a longer stem. Ooooooh. Oh and the Ritchey pedals it came with tore my cleats out of my shoes - now I need new shoes. That sucked. Ah well.

I have an extra 2000 GT XCR 2000 that I do not ride. I am getting a new bike this year and want to get rid of it. It is a much better bike than that K2, it has all mostly Shimano XT components with some LX. Fox Vanilla float rear, Marzzocchi Bomber front. The only thing is that it does not have disc brakes. I'll put a new chain on it and tune it for $400.

Buy a demo. I got a sick deal from the bike shop in fruita. $1800 bike for about 850 plus tax."The trouble with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money" --Margaret Thatcher

The K2 have good frames from what I have read, but never owned one myself. If your not going to be doing any major jumping freeriding/dh it should be a good bike. Just replace the drive train with LX or XT as it wears out, last years or the year before from a web dealer blow out is all good. Same with wheels and tires. If you then find yourself addicted to the sport like the rest of us then pony up for a more expensive rig. The K2 prolly won't leave you stranded 20 miles out on the trail unless you start hucking your meat on it. Also consider the extra weight as training, think how much faster your would be on a light weight high zoot bike

Seems so excessive for a single pivot. I do like the center mounted Rohloff though. I could definitely be talked into their new frame w/ the G-Boxx drivetrain.Originally posted by Big Hit77

As for the K2, I figure if you like the bike and think you'll ride it some, then go for it. However, if you plan on riding a lot, it'd be worth your while to drop the xtra cash on something a bit more reliable (components wise, I think the frame is fine).Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.
