Just updated to include some useful topics discussed recently - early 2012 - 13 season.
There is now so much discussion about backcountry gear that its best to find that information with a search imo.
If there's something good that I've missed please point it out. I'll add to the 2 posts which are kind of master links

I just took an AIARE course with the Colorado Mountain School, run out of Rocky Mountain National Park and would certainly recommend it.
I was slow to discovering the idea of touring, and am well passed the age of being a careless and indestructible kid. Before getting out there and putting my life in the hands of fate or putting my trust in somebody else, I felt I had to get educated.
Great class, reasonable, and convenient. Totally recommend it.
