Thread: AT Boot Flex Comparative List by model

I have to say Garmont Adrenlin's feel stiffer than the Black Diamond Methods. I have owned and skied both.

Tried on Radiums today and really liked them, good fit for me out of the box (size 29). However, the shop didn't have the ZZero or ZZeus, and I'm wondering if anyone can speak to how these boots would compare. Almost ready to pull the trigger on the radiums, but thought I'd try for a little more beta. Thanks!

the hard copy MEC cataloge sez improved , mentions progressive flex ,also a different color but what does it all mean?

Nice chart Marius! However, it should be noted that the Tornado Pro does have an interchangeable sole. The only catch is that you have to buy it separately.

On a different note, how come there are two different weights listed for the Tornado Pro?

well, one is for the tornado and one for the tornado pro (different liner)...

FWIW, last spring skied my Factors, Falcon 10's, and Guns on successive runs, same skis, same slope. (Railflex bindings). Assumed the advertised 130 was a joke, Factors would fall in the middle, maybe closer to the Falcons. Nope. Factors felt roughly the same flex as the Guns, perhaps a touch more. Say 90-95 max. Not even close to the 10's (110 flex), and IMO could only feel like 100 if you've just come off of more typical AT rigs that are about 70-80. OTOH, Factors have lateral stiffness closer to the Falcons than the Guns.

Added Dynafit Titan @ 100 flex. Current top-of-the-class in the stiffness category with the BD Factor.

Would be easier for me to update, if it could be made a STICKY

Thoughts from trying on some new AT boots

The Titan is the most bad ass touring boot I've ever seen, stiff but a damn good walk mode. I haven't tried the Factors, but I have no doubt that the Titan is the stiffest boot you'd actually WANT to do a long tour in and should work perfectly for those who want a crossover boot.

The Zzero 4-U(Red) is at least as stiff or stiffer then my old FR Aero 4's so I'd put it at 90.(its a shade softer then my Technica's which are 95's) I'd also like to trademark calling them "Red Rockets"(if the CF's are Green Machines)

I'm not sure if there have been any changes in the Zzeus, but it felt similar to my Techicas so perhaps bump it up to 95?

laseranimal - there's been no change to the ZZeus. I think its a just a touch softer then the Skookum so 90 is about right for it IMO

Perhaps it was the fact that I was trying a 28.5 vs a 27.5 last year and could actually get the buckles tighter without crushing my ankles.

In any event 5 points on a scale like this isn't really that much. I seriously doubt if while blindfolded any of us could tell the difference between an 80 and an 85 flex boot on the list and how the boot fits a particular foot and the addition of straps/liners/spoilers will have a lot more to do with how a boot flexes

Anyone knows what the differences are between the garmont radium and shogun?

shogun = radium in PU, whether or not they have dyna inserts it's a matter of debate.....

the pair I fondled definitely had dyna inserts.

interesting, because they were presented without dyna inserts, as a cheap version of the radiums.... most likely they understood there is no more room for dyna-free AT boots

That was in France...but two pairs i saw in switz.had no inserts...perhaps there are two versions with the same name...

so I am now in possession of some Shoguns with tech inserts

AIUI they got a lot of feedback along the lines of V61's comment - nice boot but stick some inserts in and you have something pretty cool.

they are available for about EUR130 less than Radiums, are made from PU which means they are a tad heavier but should also be stiffer at skiing temperatures (flip side - more of a pain in the ass to get on when cold ) and less prone to getting chewed by Dukes.

they come with the supposedly crappy padlock liner. i haven't been all that fussy about liners in the past but the proof of the pudding etc. and you can spend quite a bit on sorting that out before you find yourself spending as much as you would on a Radium or top end Scarpa or Dynafit off the shelf.

they don't have the funky buckle lock thingy you get with the Radiums but from what I hear they ice up anyway

will do a comparative flex with my Spirit 4s shortly

Have now skied and toured with the Shoguns. Tour mode is the same as the Radium - gives a nice stride. Possibly a little better than my old Spirit 4s but NBD

They ski very nicely. I took out the stock liners (which are crap) and replaced them with some liners from some Garmont Shamans, which has worked pretty well. I would say they are noticeably stiffer than Spirit 4s and ski much better. The cuff seems higher and the flex feels nicer. It is possible to "overflex" them but this required me to bury the tips in something and I am quite a big fella (210ish). Carving fattish skis on hard pistes wasn't a problem and performance in soft snow was great.

For reference was skiing 188 Wailer 105s with dynafits.

Summary - probably not quite ready to ditch my alpine boots altogether but no longer feel that using AT boots is much of a compromise. Would probably cope with these on 194 XXLs without too much complaining. Well worth checking out

How about the general fit / volume of the shoguns? Care to give a bit specs of your feet and impressions of the boot?
