Review; Sir Francis Bacon

Mounted for a 29.5 Technica at recommended with Salomon 916 (drilled including the 5th hole [some people leave it out]). Skied one day at Loon on a decent day. Not much ice, mostly groomed packed powder. Not this skis ideal habitat, but I wanted to ski them after mounting them.
They carve very very well for a 115 waisted ski. Much better than my Made'ns that I had last year. Super fun to just cruise around the mountain and very skiable switch. However, they are very soft, so make sure you stay centered. Just goofing off on the tails, I almost looped out on more than one occasion.
Speaking of soft, these were the easiest buttering skis I have ever been on. You can just rock right up on the tips. The extended tip on them is nice to because you wont catch an edge when spining off the tips. However, they are a bit hooky when going straight. I got into a dh tuck at one point and went to bomb it down a blue. Pre-jumped a roller a tad early. Normally not a huge deal, but upon touching the top of the roller, the left ski hooked up and went right across my right. I fell hard and have a sweet bruise on my left calf from where the edge slammed it.
Felt weird off jumps, but im guessing its because the bindigns are so heavy. Landings felt soft, even when I knew the snow was hard. Didnt do any rails on them and probably wont.
Bottom Line:
A super fun ski on edgable snow, but not something for ice. Could probably mount a little forward of the midsole for more park, but I would keep it
where it is for powder.

I would love some of these line skis if they'd stop making them so damn floppy.

Oh, and I agree with core shot. Why name a ski after a famous artist and then have cartoon animals on it? Unless I'm showing my ignorance here and it's actually from Sir FB's 'regressive phase'. I find it incongruous and kinda disrespectful.
Although, I would like a Monet with winnie-the-pooh on it!

is it just me, or does that mount location make it look like there is more tail than tip?

The 07 Line EP Pro is slightly fatter than the Bacons, same flex, and come in 185.
Oh, and the Armada ARW was designed by Grete Eliasson, thus the graphics.
Also, Jerr, I believe Sir Francis Bacon was a political philosopher from the Victorian Period, not a famous artist, although I could be wrong......Last edited by chronic_rider; 01-26-2007 at 04:16 PM.

The topsheets of the SFB may be a little childish for some, but on a positive note, I like the bases on them. Thanks japollner for the review. Hope you get some deep pow to really test them out.

Well, I'll be!!!
Sir Francis Bacon is as you said - but there is also Francis Bacon (no sir bit - that's the clincher I suppose) the artist. Reasonably famous and a bit controversial. I assumed it was him. Thanks for the heads up. Something I guess I should have known. Time for some reading.

When are people going to learn that you dont need a ski like this to be stiff?!? These are designed to ski like a snowboard rides. They are meant to be buttery and fun. I have skied the Bacon and it has No Speed Limit, I couldnt make this ski go fast enough. I thought it was more stable than my ANTs. I ride the Elizabeth as my everyday/groomer ski this season and that Ski is soft just like the bacon with a very similar shape. On the groomers on Hood this weekend (no snow in over a week and clear and cold after a freeze/thaw/freeze) I learned that a Wide ski with torsional stiffness like the Lizy also has no speed limit.

I saw a guy at Alyeska last week with the Bacons. They look cooler in person - the picture doesn't do them justice. He raved about their all-mountain capability, even said they rail groomers. The majority of rippers on this forum are into long, uber-stiff skis, so naturally a ski like the Bacons will get its fair share of criticism. Props to Eric Pollard and Line for innovating and going out on a limb with their design and graphics. I think the Bacon, Elizabeth and Prophet 130 are awesome skis --- they are not for everyone, but no one ski is. Next year's EP Pro looks sweet as well...
japollner - thanks for the review on the Bacons.

I think a lot of it depends on your ski style and background. I spend very little time in the park, and prefer stiff skis for when I hit cut up stuff or something I didn't see. It's not really a matter of speed limit, it's a matter of how comfortable you feel on the ski at speeds. When I'm on a less stiff ski and I hit crud or unexpected snow, I want the ski to behave predictably and not flop around at all.
My experience with the SFB was that they got kind of floppy if you were straight lining, or transitioning between turns slowly. If you're going edge-to-edge super quickly, then the flex of any ski is much less important. If you're trying to ride out a huck through avy debris, the floppiness of a ski definitely becomes an issue.
A soft ski skied edge-to-edge quickly isn't very different than a stiffer ski. It's when you're not carving turns hard, or floating in powder that the flex becomes an issue.
That's my take anyway.

Wait to get next years if you are really interested. I was told that the tip delaminating issue is fixed in next years model by extending the wood core all the way to the tip.

My tip delamed...the core certainly does not go up to the tip in this years model. It's becoming a big hassle. It's shaping up for me just to get my money back and cut my losses. I made a thread about it over on NS if you want more...
