A cross post of my TR on the Ski/Snowboard page, since there isn't really a fly fishing forum.
With a high temp in the 60's today, I decided to skip skiing and head to the river for the first time this season to see how it looked. It was dead calm at the house this morning, but it never fails, the minute I step out on the river the wind starts blowing. I wasn't really expecting to catch anything, but got the gear out and made some casts for a couple hours while checking out some of my old spots.
The drive in after leaving the highway. The mountains on the horizon are at the Wyoming/Colorado line.
Saw some good 'ole Wyoming horse power on the way in, under the Snowy Range.
Pulling into the parking area, with the typical modification added to the sign, you know, to better handle the wind.
Got the whole place to myself.
Complete with luxury facilities. Good thing I took care of that business before I left the house.
View from the parking area ain't bad. Snowy Range again.
One of my carnivore friends left a little something behind; the leg of an antelope.
A little shameless product placement shot while I was gearing up.
An eagle's nest overlooking the river.
Random rod shot.
The Laramie River. I know it really ain't much compared to many of the world class trout streams in the region, but it is my own little slice of heaven and I can get to this spot from my house in under 10 minutes.
A few more shots of the river.
While I was fishing, Canadian Geese came in low and flew probably within 20 feet right over my head. By the time I got the camera out they had passed, but I got the shot as fast as I could.
Driving out.
Just before getting back to the highway, some of my antelope friends ran across the road in front of me.

A couple fishing pictures from today! The net opening is 21 inches.
I know it's kind of small but its hard to focus when you are looking at this!

The region is a good bit below average. However, April and May are usually the determining months for the summer levels. SW MT & NW WY saw VERY warm temps and very little snow in March, (14 inches at JH). Many of our rivers have already seen a bunch of runnoff days.
One good thing around here is that most of the resivoirs are above normal. That should help out some of our fisheries this summer regardless of moisture in the next couple months.
So, June is a tough call right now but I'd bet YNP streams will be fishing well. SW MT should be coming around by 6/1 or so, unless the northern rockies get pounded in May. The later part of the summer might be a bit tough though.

Try this CJ: http://mt.water.usgs.gov/.
In my experience early June is prime time for runoff in SW MT, so if you're coming then be prepared to fish lakes, spring creeks, or the Horn/Mo. Early-mid May you could find some Mother's Day Caddis action on the Madison and or Yellowstone, but its a big gamble. The trout have a hard time eating when the river's gone to chocolate milk.
I understand the Firehole opener is pretty sweet too.
