    At quiver question

Yes I have searched, and would like to get some opinions on my situation. I am 5'9", 140# and a very agressive skier. I would like to start some pseudo ski mountaineering/backcountry trips. Currently I have 191 ants with freerides for side-country expeditions/powder b.c. days. I realized that if I ever got into any sketchy tight situations with this set-up, I may be screwed. Plus, they are way too damn huge to climb anything decent with. So I decided I need another AT set-up. It would be used for billygoating all around conditions and an extremely wide range of conditions... from powder to rocks, so these have to be pretty bomber. I wouldn't mind going light either.

So I have about $750 to work with here. I currently do not have AT boots, but come february I should have sufficient funding, so I will probably wait till then. I was looking at MTLions 173 explosiv's/170 heli daddys. Would these be reccomended? And for binders... I like the weight of the silvrettas, but dont trust them. Freerides/Naxos seem nice, but heavy. Dynafit would be light, but the boots aren't bomber enough from what I have read (is that correct?) and I dont want to end up with some franken-boot... no offense engineers. So I am kind of leaning towards the fritschi explorers or whatever they are called. Any reccomendations?

    thanks for the help

there are some totally solid at boots out there.

Ive been riding 186 LPs on freeride aeros with the flex limiter tabs ground off and they are PLENTY stiff. I would have NO reservations whatsoever about skiing anything I am at the top of and havent yet.

comforts are also solid depending on how you ski. they definitely require you to be smoother...basically just search for jonathan s' thread on potentially useful info for dynafit users.

the helidaddy would be a great option.

edit: marshal beat me and actually included the link. thanks

you can beef up a AT boot too, raichle tounges, power strap around liner and second one around shell, extra spoiler around back cuff. Most mods are not that franken.

volkl is stiffer, more durable, better hard charging ski

atomic HD: softer tip, nice powder only ski, more friendly, bit lighter.

    {start sales pitch} I have both in 170/173. {done sale pitch}

bindings: dynafit is light, harder to use.
freerides are the higher DIN version of the explorers
naxos: again a lighter, and lower DIN verision of the 13 DIN version

You already have a powder AT rig.

Ski Mountaineering = Get a lightweight rig.

Dynafit TLT + Sugar Daddys (or any lightweight ski with an 80sh waist) + Dynafit-compatible boot THAT FITS.

Lots of variety in boots now. Get something that fits, don't buy a specific model because someone in the thread recommended them.

Alright, I think explosiv+dynafit vert. is the way to go for now. Unless the weight difference between skis is just too extreme. The heli daddys seem too powder oriented. Will probably upgrade to the 179 bro with dynafit for next year. Thanks again everyone.
