Thread: reuse wax?

After I scrape all the wax off my skis I end up with a big clump of wax in a box by the end of the year. This got me to thinking, could I melt this stuff onto my skis at the end of the season to use it as a storage wax? I don't know what happens to ski wax after you melt it once but it seems like it'd be alright. I guess it might have a little dirt in it but that's what base prep wax is for right? If I'm going to clean the bases at the beginning of the season anyway would it hurt anything?

Would I do it? No

You can get bulk wax for cheap. Not worth the trouble.

Unless....if you are one of those recycling fetichists, go ahead. But remember the whole deal of warm waxing is to get the dirt off the bases. Why put it all back in?

HAHA!! At the shop I once worked at (on hill), we saved the scraped wax and gave it to the snowboarders.

There you go.....the ONLY useful purpose to collect and re-use scraped dirty wax.

You should have seen the block of wax that formed after we melted it all together... It was SICK! I've seen un-flushed toilets that looked better...

Use it on your girlfriend when her muff gets out of control...that'll teach her...

We just used a heat gun on a relatively low setting.

Before you start this, you may want to pull the battery on the smoke detectors but I'd suggest this would work:

Go to the kitchen and get out the biggest, best pan you can find and fire up the stove (or the electric skillet could work too). Put in the wax shavings and make sure the heat is adjusted low enough that it does not smoke (same trick as an iron, slowly increase the heat until it melts). Once it is melted/ liquidied, get out the nice service bowl or nicest large bowl in the house you can find to transfer it into to cool (and of course after taking the kitchen strainer out to place over the bowl to filter out the big pieces of gunk and dirt as you pour into the bowl)

PS if you have an open flame gas stove, be extra careful.

The old fashioned way. Find an old pot and put it on a low heat setting and melt it. If you have a mold or want to shape it into something, you can just pour it into the mold. We used to make Christmas candles that way back in the 70's.
