Jamie Pierre's Cliff Hucking Ministry - A Christian's Perspective
I am a Christian, and I would like to express my opinion on Jamie Pierre's 'ministry'. Hopefully I won't cast or receive the judgement that seems to be of so much distaste to many of you in regards to christians.
I like JP's heart but am unsure of his methods. I'm sure more than a few of us have watched his hucks and said, "that mang's loco." This to me doesn't set up the most credibility when trying to share the word of God. I don't know JP, but he comes across as a crazy guy who attributes his abilities to God. I fear that his actions will put off non-christians and just fuel the perception that we are nuts. Perhaps God truly did call JP to jump off that ridiculous cliff knowing he would then have a larger platform to spread God's love. After all, he did do a half gainer off a 255ft cliff, landing on his head, and somehow came out unharmed. Unfortunately this all comes across to me more as testing God than praising Him. When the devil told Jesus to jump off the highest point in the temple to prove He was the Son of God becuase, "God will command his angels concering you, and they will lift you up in thier hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone." Jesus responds with, "it is also written, 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"
There is this stigma with religion that God can only work through supernatural powers (ie, having someone land on their head from 255ft and live to tell about it). But a basic truth in Christianity is that God created the earth. If He created it, then did He not also write the 'laws' of science? Meaning that He works through 'natural, scientifically explainable ways' 99.9% of the time. Sure, God can work out of the 'laws' of science, He can do whatever He pleases, and frankly it's flashier and gets more attetion. Plenty of Jesus' ministry was miracles, and lots of God's people have performed miracles. But we overlook all the natural workings of God. Turning water into wine was cool, but everyday God evaporates sea water, turns it into a cloud, that cloud then cruises over the mountains and gives us snow, that snow eventually melts (kind of a bummer), but it gives us drinking water. That's pretty impressive if you ask me. And yes, there are perfectly good scientific explanations for how this works, but again, if He created it, then isn't it His workings?
So is God using JP to spread His name by jumping off big rocks? Not for me to say, but if JP has been able to bring just one person to know the Lord through His actions then the answer is yes.Go Sharks.

"The ping-pong ball that has been deflected in it's trajectory has been subjected to exactly that phenomenon".
And you can quote me on that.

I'd like to think that if there's a God, he cares about us all equally and treats us equally. I don't like the idea that God treats some of us better than others, and that some of us endure tragedy and hardship, while others have great luck and special abilities, because God consciously decided that's the way it should be.
I prefer to believe in the laws of probability, averages and physics, rather than superstition. Maybe God is a little too busy keeping Saturn on its axis and making the tide go in and out to give a fuck about whether or not JP survives his next huck? When in doubt, point it out.

Just wanted to take this opportunity to say "I heart Christians" - real Christains though, not the new ones who equate gathering wealth with being good in god's eyes.
Real Christians are about love and caring for all, not about greed and punishing and limiting others."Active management in bear markets tends to outperform. Unfortunately, investors are not as elated with relative returns when they are negative. But it does support the argument that active management adds value." -- independent fund analyst Peter Loach

It was a good thing Jesus had this out, or at least was a quick thinker to come up with this response. Otherwise we would have missed the whole nailing him to the cross bit, and there would be no resurrection. Unfortuantely because Jesus didn't take the dare we are suck with the whole Christian faith, and of course the whole bastardization is Islam, and all the crazy fuckers both of these mythologies have created.

I'm sorry that has been your experience, I don't claim to be any better than any of those Christians, I certainly have my flaws. It is often said that God likes to work against the odds, funny since He's omnipotent. Example, the Apostles which He untrusted to spread His word, they were the guys who flunked out of Rabbi school and ended up as 'lowly fishermen.' The same is true today, God's love and truth is spread simply by people, imperfect humans. Unfortunately no man (or woman) will ever do Jesus justice, and many will set an awful example.
For example, if you call yourself a Deist. Not that you do or want me to, but simply based of your statements above. Then you and Thomas Jefferson would both be Deist. As you stated above,
I certainly wouldn't assume that because you are a deist that you too must be sleeping with your slaves. Clearly in this way, Thomas Jefferson is not best representing the Deist community. And I'm not implying that you assume that all Christians hate gays, jews and muslims. Yet mearly emphasizing that many Christians poorly represent Jesus, and I am sorry that fact seems to be overwhelming your preception of Christians.
Cliff Huckable has is right, Christianity is about sharing the love of God with ALL people, that means showing them Christ's love by loving them.
As Far as Pastor Benny goes, that's a flashy way to travel. Hopefully they did enough research to find that it is the cheapest way possible to travel as much as they do and spread the Gospel. They do talk about trying to be good stewards of God's resources, though this may have been a case where taking a less attention grabbing means of travel despite possibly costing more would have lead to a more humble appearance of the ministry.Last edited by fluffballs; 12-03-2006 at 03:09 AM.
