DIY avy blasting?
Anyone ever give any thought to making small explosives to blast avys like ski patrol? I know I sound like Osama but seriously, even bundling up a couple good sized firecrackers or some black powder in a film canister might do some good. I never liked having all my fingers attached anyway...

How about M80s for hand charges and a potato gun for long range.

You can always do the old dry ice/urine bomb.

Ahh, it's time for the annual "I wanna blow up avalanches like ski patrol" thread.

This practice falls under the El Guapo studfinder methodology of avalanche safety.

Why not ditch the bad idea, but follow your interest and pursue a job with avalanche control at a resort? Does anyone know where to start for getting a job like that? What position(s) would you have to work up from?

I believe it was determined that dry ice devices did not have nearly enough kerpow to be of any use and that their fusing mechanism was highly unreliable (it's pretty sweet when it doesn't go off right away... and goes off 3 hours later when some unsuspecting guy skis over it)
IIRC even the small hand charges have 2.25lbs of explosive...
Three questions to ask yourself before you go:
1. Does your life insurance cover suicide?
2. Does your health insurance cover you if you blow off your own arm?
3. What is the weather forecast for Gitmo?Last edited by Summit; 11-24-2006 at 04:34 PM.

Yes that is what we use. Mostly 2.2 and some 4.5. (1kg and 2kg actually)
I doubt that firecrackers would have enough oomph. Who really wants to add 5 lbs to their pack anyways??? You don't want just one charge, because you should have a backup to deal with any dud that you might encounter.
Obvioulsy this is all so far from legal or practical...

hmmm... yeah its been a fun couple of days looking at ways to blow your limbs off... i imagine the most dangerous part (short of blowing yourself up) would be having too weak a blast (or blasting the wrong spot), deeming it safe and then getting buried. I do think more should be published on controlled avy triggering with belayed cutting and whatever else, instead of relying on snow checks and post burial recovery. whatev...
