Thread: Best American Rock Band of All Time

Here's a fairly obscure one, from New Jersey I believe: The Feelies. I was wondering how long it would take for someone to mention The Doors. Not sure, but could Jim Morrison also have been born in Germany? I don't think he was, but it's a distinct possibility, so I'll go check. BTW I started this thread after I had been listening to a CCR song on my iPod and was so impressed by how good the song was even though I had heard it a few hundred times in my lifetime, but maybe never before with headphones. It happened to be "Commotion".

The Feelies were great, I have them on Vinyl somewhere around here.

One thing I think about sometimes with older music is "what if this just came out? would it still sound fresh and good?" CCR gets that nod a lot.

There's so many it's basically an imossible question, but I'd add X and Black Flag and Bad Brains to the list.

Wow best rock band. Seems like that would change from year to year depending on snowfall. There are some great rock bands at the Butte. I've still never skied Squaw, but I've seen pictures of some great rock bands there. I like any rock band with a good steep landing and fresh snow on it.

I can't believe it took until page 3 for the doors to get a mention. My vote it either them or CCR. And just to throw this out there, not sure if they're considered a rock band, and not sure if they're all born in the US, but how about Los Lobos?

I would toss Springsteen in there - not sure how strong I'd advocate, but he deserves to be in the discussion.

I'd also like to think the Flaming Lips deserve a nod.

I've never understood the fascination with Springsteen. He's all right, I guess. But what makes him any different from, say, Sting? Or mid to late '80's adult contemporary style Clapton? Nobody claims that music is great.

...I don't really think they're the greatest American rock band of all-time, but I'll throw it out there.

Under durress I think I'd probably go with The Doors. Morrison had his overindulgent moments for sure, but hard to deny they had some great tunes.

If we are talking rock: Velvet Underground (if we are willing to give Cale an exemption) otherwise Stooges, Jane's Addiction or Ramones.

If we ar talking best bands: Dead, Mothers of Invention or Talking Heads.

As much as I love RHCP, Nirvana and Rage they ain't in the same musical league as any of the above.

There is no way Nirvana should even be in this discussion. They were on the decline when Cobain died. At the time, Pearl Jam was MUCH better. I'm not saying Nirvana is a bad band, but they do not deserve to be in this discussion whatsoever.

Also, Bruce Springsteen is an absolutely amazing songwriter. I never liked him much until recentley when I started listening to a lot of his lesser known work. They guy has some amazing stuff.
