    Canon G7

Anyone played with the new G7 yet?

Picked one up in the store today and messed around iwth it. Loved the manual control, still has a view finder, and the hot shoe would certainly be handy for a getto remote flash set up.

Would like to get one out in the dark dank forest here in North Van and see if can actually get some good mountain biking shots. Low light performance would be what either makes or breaks the purchasing decision for my next camera.

It's the camera I plan on replacing my A80 with. Costo.com ran out of them on friday though
Anybody run the wide angle on the G series with the adapter? I've heard it obscures the viewfinder, at least on the A95.

Been poking around more and found a shot with a 0.75x converter.

Viewfinder and AF sensor are blocked. No worries about the af sensor as I would hope to be shooting manual, but would be nice to not have the viewfinder blocked.

Hmmm. So I guess the question is: How nuts do you want to go with your compact? I already have a 30D, but I just want to be able to shoot wide with my little camera, and like you said: Shoot in the relative low light of the dark woods. This thing supports up to ISO 1600.

Most people who were really looking forward to this camera coming out are throwing a shitfit about Canon removing RAW support from the G series.

I don't think my game is up to working with RAW just yet so it won't be a deal breaker for me. It will be nice just having something with good full manual control.

The 2fps burst sucks, would have been great to see 3 or more.

i was gonna get one but ended up with the A710, its pocketable while the G7 isn't.. and its $200 less with most of the same features.. for the price of a G7 you can get the upcoming Nikon D40 body w/ lens kit.

What additional manual control does it have that a A-series doesn't have? AFAIK, the only things that set it apart are the lens, the Digic III chip, the hotshoe, and ISO 1600. So, considering this, I am on the fence myself.

or the A640, doesn't have IS or 6X zoom but has a flip and twist LCD which some people can't seem to live without, has the same 10mp sensor as the G7 so image quality is the same, but is bulkier than the A710.. but really image quality is great with all the cameras so it just comes down to features, size and price, but you should check out dcresource.com. they have reviews of all the cameras and the guy takes pictures of the same things for each review so you can easily compare one camera to another.

no additional manual controls.. differences are 10mp bigger sensor, digic III, hotshoe, iso 1600, higher resolution LCD, focus/exposure bracketing, and iso dial..

iso dial is handy, bracketing is very handy, i could personally care less about the rest, especially for $200 more and a much bulkier/heavier camera with a not so great grip.

Bump... I'm shopping for a better camera, and the G7 is looking like a good choice. I currently have a Canon S400 (4MP) little point-n-shoot, no manual controls. Pic quality is OK, but I'd like the option of manual controls, and miss the quality of my old Canon EOS 35mm camera (gave that to my dad; he likes film, doesn't shoot digital).

Beach Camera has the G7 at $497, free shipping, no tax, and good ratings on resellerratings.com.

Anyone know of a better deal that doesn't involve a shady gray market bait-n-switch NYC camera shop? Newegg has G7 w/ cheap case & SD card for $525ish, shipped, but I don't really need/want the case or card.

I think the main thing that makes the G7 attractive is the IS lens. I do wish it had the flip-out screen like the A640.

One thing that annoys me about Canon point and shoots is the fact that they don't put the ISO setting in the EXIF file. They use some proprietary data location in the file which can only be read by their own software. So, unlike the big brother EOS bodies, you can't review your ISO setting in Lightroom or Aperture.

I think the main homerun Canon hit with the G7 is the styling of the body. It looks like an old rangefinder camera, which is retro cool. I have to admit that plays a major role in how I feel about the camera, although it shouldn't!

    You in Portland yet?

How useful is the flip-n-pivot screen? I can see it being handy for taking pics where you hold the camera overhead, but otherwise...

Shirk bought one of these so hopefulyly he'll give us the full review.

I think the G7 looks like one hell of a good ski camera... I just couldn't justify the price. I think anyone who takes care of their cameras and likes manual control but doesn't have a DSLR should seriously consider one.

Here is my thread about the G7 as a ski cam (how I *almost* bought one)

Better stay away from the 710IS then... 1.7fps

THIS JUST IN! THE 710IS HAS NO C-CUSTOM MODE!!! That means you probably have to turn on burst mode every time you turn on the camera.

Trigger pulled. Canon G7 coming my way from Dell, $492 shipped, courtesy of some deal stacking via Slickdeals.net. Would've been $33 cheaper except they charge sales tax in Nevada...
