Sierra TR/Tioga Pass Last Weekend (w/Pics)

    Hi all,

Since we’re still waiting for some good snow in the Tahoe/Sierra area I went backpacking over the weekend. The plan was to drive through Yosemite to Tioga Pass, then park just East of the Tioga Pass/Yosemite park entrance as there is no overnight parking allowed right now in the park.

We walked in to the mountains toward the north face of Mt. Dana. What a beautiful area. Some pics below show what it looked like. The interesting part came Friday night/Saturday morning when it started to snow fairly hard. We decided to walk out around 3pm Saturday- it was a wonderland. I was looking at all the faces thinking about which lines would be skiable this spring. Anyway, by the time we got to our car about 5 inches had fallen. Tioga road through the park and from Lee Vining was closed putting us between both gates. We walked to the top of Tioga Pass from our car. What a sight! It’s not often one can be on top of the pass with no one around- no ranger, people, cars, etc. The road was covered w/ snow- was very cool. Luckily the East gate by Lee Vining was left unlocked so we did eventually get out of the area. The drive back took a while, but was very scenic- had to head all the way north to Sout Lake Tahoe, then back down to the Bay Area.

Anyway, it was a great transition from fall to winter. Hope it keeps up- gotta stretch my legs with some new sticks.

    Then it snowed!

Let us know how Mammoth is. I'm sure they got some- looks like the snow today/tonight might help a bit. I'm pretty sure it still all groomers though...

Excellent TR!!! Those shots are beautiful! What a wonderful backpacking trip - getting snowed on. Perhaps you triggered Ullr?

Thx. Yep- hopefully Ullr is awake now in the sierra. We'll see what falls tonight, then another system early next week? Temps seem warm here right now...

    Beautifull Shots

    I love the Sierra, HOME

I like that you captured the landscape right before it gets covered in white for another 7 months.

I have been in an office and a hotel room in VA for the past month. It was nice to see a bit of home.
