We built an Amish barn this past summer in Wisconsin with the help of an Amish crew from Lacrosse Wisc and pals Will and his dog Rasco from Squaw Valley, California.
First stop, Amish sawmill....

You will notice some electrified tools being used, and some gas chainsaws. Some Amish communities allow the use of these items on a job. Our crew did not drive, and came to the job site from a 5 hour taxi ride.

That's cool and all, but what's the point of shunning modern tech that makes life easier in general? A 5 hour taxi ride sounds unfun.

car seat?
sweet dumb and dumber haircut.
love the smell of the fresh poured and the fresh cut.
Buddy Will was a great help, actually working on the barn as opposed to standing around taking pictures like some jackass.......

My old man was invited to a couple of Amish barn raisings but I think they were more witness style. And PA Amish would never take their shirts off, for shame for shame.![]()
Whoa.......then an elder showed up for week two. All of a sudden everbody was back to wearing shirts (hundred plus temps for two weeks). There was ZERO chatter and the mood tensed up markedly. Don't give a ride to any hitchhiking Amish elders.....
Well, almost everybody had a shirt on. Here's Will taunting the elder. Good fun..

Man, I would never fuck with that elder, that dude looks like he's had entire houses dropped on his head and never noticed.
The only thing worse than the feeling that you are going to die is the realization that you probably won't.
Finally finished....
Time for Rasco to take a little dip. He's a hard working avalanche dog at Squaw so this was a good tune up for the winter....

thats a nice lookin barn
Preserving farness, nearness presences nearness in nearing that farness
Sweet TR. I've only seen the Amish put a barn up in Kingpin.
I could live in that damn thing!! Sweet barn!
Nice pictures, how'd you manage to steal so many of their souls without them getting pissed?
I think that the human mind is unique among all other forms of life in that it can spontaneously create unique thoughts and provide unique behaviors. Instead of rewarding that uniqueness we, for some reason probably because of cultural and social necessity, we chastise unique behavior and reward conformity.
I'd like to see it covered in snow![]()
...Remember, those who think Global Warming is Fake, also think that Adam & Eve were Real...

What was the purpose of the effort? Other than build a barn...
An Am' with a chainsaw is like a vegan eating bacon.
