Tire Chains in LCC/BCC: JONG Question

I'm a new driver to the area. I have 2 cars. One is an AWD crossover vehicle with tires 255/55R18; the other is a 1999 FWD SAAB 9-5 wagon. I think that during the winter there will be days when the LCC access road will only be open to vehicles with chains.? It is very difficult finding chains for the 255/55R18. I don't want to be in a position where I am shut out of the canyon. These are my questions:

Are there times when AWD vehicles w/out chains are prohibited from entering LCC (except when the road is completely closed)?

Do chains on FWD vehicles work just a good as chains on AWD vehicles?

Is it worth getting chains, or better yet, is it essential to have chains, if you don't want to get locked out of LCC on pow days?

    Thanks in advance!

if you have 4wd or awd you don't need chains. chains are for 2wd, they generally only check if the road has been shut for a while or if it's nuking.

as you know, C, I have an AWD vehicle, too. I really think that changing tires over to dedicated snows is the only way to go in Utah. Chains suck.

Just like I stated in your WTB thread, don't waste your time with chains. Go with a dedicated snow tire.

THanks. It sounds like good, but expensive, advise. Right now, all snow tires for the AWD are pricing out at $225-$240/tire. OUCH!.

Oh well, better safe than sorry. When I get to Utah, I will aske you guys for a recommendation of where I should go to buy the tires. Any maggots in Utah in the tire business (Bridgestone; Continental; Michelin?

Is that the price for just the tires? is it cheaper to get a whole other set of winter wheels + winter tires? something with a more reasonable size (ie 16")

    hmmm...just found these on tirerack:

    http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....place=0#Survey

    4 x $146
    + $72.68 S&H
    ____________
$656.68 to the door, plus $40 or so to get em installed.

Pirelli is known to make quality rubber, and those tires appear to be pretty highly rated (9.0 for deep snow traction, 9.2 for would buy again).
...so I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

I've never had them check if I had snow tires or regular tires on my Subaru.

Granted, I'm due for new tires and putting snow tires on for the winter, but I wouldn't say it's necessary if you have AWD.

Check for trade ins. A lot of people sell their cars in the summer and forget about the snow tires they had for it and trade them for tires to fit their new cars in the fall. I just scored some hardly used Blizzaks for $250 for the set mounted.

Also, if there is a Big O Tire where you are at, check them out. If you buy your tires there and save the receipt, they will do the fall/spring changeovers for free for the life of the snow tires so you don't have to buy snow wheels and do it yourself. Granted, your bling dubs might get beat up over the winter.

What's wrong with you. No self-respecting gangsta would ever consider spinners on wheels less than 22".

Does lcc/bcc ever see chains+4wd conditions, or do they just close it before it gets that bad?
