Cool TR: Bluebird and Bottomless at Steamboat 2.7.04

    TR: Steamboat 2.7.04

With over 31” of light champagne pow reported this past week at mid-mountain, and well over that total for the upper mountain, today was one for the books. Got up early and made the drive over to Routt County with an old friend, Wahama88. Arrived to a virtually empty parking lot, sped up on the gondola and darted through the trees over to Storm Peak.

    What drought?

Steamboat has to be one of my favorite mountains for untracked lines days after a storm. Sure, most of the designated trails were tracked up, yet still soft, but most of the tree runs were graced with an abundance of deep fluff. We cranked out a few runs off the Storm Express and then headed over to the Pony for a visit to the white room.

Lot’s of pillow drops went down and frequent face shots were had as we floated through the trees. Lap after lap we found new stashes with bigger pillows and softer landings. Some of the lightest snow I have skied all year.

Amazing. Wahama got his first visit to the white room today. He had a shit-eating grin that for a moment I thought was permanent. Another great part of this sport is watching others push their limits and get rewarded for it with deep snow, a clean landing, a tight-flawless line and a mouthful of snow at the bottom.

Best Pow day of the year yet. The cold white smoke was still hanging in the air on the second adventure down the boulder field with mountainous cliffs engulfing us on both sides, the garrisons of a priceless treasure in the form of frozen Hydorgen and Oxygen

Great pics and TR man. Were you guys inbounds all day or did you hit some OB stuff? I haven't been to the 'Boat in three years and even though they don't have much in the way of challenging terrain(or maybe I just didn't find it), that made me wanna head back there right now. I skiied a lot off the Pony Express lift and never saw any real pillow drops, next time I'm there I'll have to look harder. Nice pics.

    Ben,

There's some really good terrain inbounds, you just have to explore a little. There are some big drops, especially over towards the Pony Express and Xmas Tree bowl area.

Xboat- Was thinking about you after dipping into the "promised land" for our second run. When are you coming back out?

You know, there's like a butt-load of gangs at this school. This one gang kept wanting me to join because I'm pretty good with a bowstaff.

If it wasn't the busiest weekend of the year for the restaurant bc, I would be up there in a heartbeat. Steamboat is flat? Yes maybe inbounds, but you ain't goin' to find sick pow like that inbounds either
