Is a watch necessary?
I am going to be doing a TMC in NZ on the 15th and have been wondering about a watch, no where in the to bring list says that a watch is needed. I personally do not use watches much as i have a phone.
Can anyone also reccomend a good mountaineering watch? how would a garmin fortrex fair?

You'd kindof have to know what you want it for to pick one out.
I didn't wear a watch for about 5 years after getting out of the Army. I have a phone, there's a clock in my car, on my computer... where the hell would I be that I need to know what time it is and don't?
But recently I bought a heart rate monitor, and for the sake of laziness and not losing the damn thing I just keep wearing it.
edit: why did you post this in Summits???Last edited by altagirl; 10-27-2006 at 05:26 AM.

because summits is related to mountaineering as people who climb summits would know what would be right to use or not use

Watches come in real handy in the backcountry, especially if it has the right gizmos.

Summits is the word we use here for a get-together/gathering. We have an annual summit at a new location each year, a Utah mini-summit, East Coast summit, etc. It doesn't actually have anything to do with mountaineering. You'd have better luck putting this in Tech Talk.

calm down, i never knew summits was for only get togethers. I thought it was just all things related to mountains, never realised that by summit you ment large meetings. There is no signage any where about this. You must be a prick if you can really go off at someone for posing a question like this, if you care that much just delete it or move it to another thread, but you have no right to tell me to fuck off if i have not done any thing wrong

Great, now this MENSA's an expert on US law.
Look, you're presumably a native anglophone, so I would expect you to understand the "summits" might have other definitions.
Regardless, my venom towards thee has more to do with your snotty response to AltaGirl on the "your" prefered definition of summits than your exihibited cluelessness. Really, did you not even take a cursory look around this forum before posting?¡Órale, vato!

it was not a snotty response, i could have worded it better but all i was saying was that people who climb are those who know which is the way to go, i ment no harm in my response, it was just a reply to my actions.
OK look, i got it wrong i posted in the wrong place if you really want this gone then report it to a mod so it can be moved as it was just a stupid mistake that i did, but no way should i have to put up with the actions you placed, you could have just asked me to delete this thread and place it in the correct area.

No, we don't moderate here; post stays. There is no mountaineering forum here to move this to, BTW, or perhaps you have still not discerned that.
From your avatar, I'll guess that you're a skier. Skiing's what this Board's really about. Stick around a bit, check out the other forums, and don't take the place so seriously.¡Órale, vato!

But there's always self-moderation.
