Why won't the press say Foley's Gay???

OK, so I don't know how I feel about this. If you didn't know, Republican Congressman Mark Foley from Florida resigned this week after it was learned (ABC got the emails) that he'd sent either an aid or a page or whatever, some sexually suggestive emails. Apparently its been an open secret for some time that Foley is gay. He stays in the closet, and no one has outed him, but people have known, or at least had strong suspicions, for a long time. I think the gay press lets him stay in the closet because he has a decent voting record on gay issues (except that he voted for the Defense of Marriage Act).

So, its been reported all over the place that he sent an underage page and/or some other underage people, suggestive and inappropriate emails and/or IMs. I just assumed that this was a female page since no mention was made. I probably shouldn't have assumed that, but I did.

I feel strongly that someone's sexual preference has not bearing on their ability to do a job, or anything else for that matter. I also feel gays deserve every right that straight couples enjoy, including marriage, but that's a different discussion. However, I do feel that if someone outright lies about an important part of their life, they probably don't belong in Congress. Sure, being in the closet and the host of lies, deceipt and duplicity that goes with being closeted are probably great preparation for a life in politics. But you lied all these years.

So shouldn't the press be reporting that it was a male page that he was hitting on? That doesn't make it any more or less egregious, but it seems to me that its a part of the story that people deserve to hear. Part of me says that it doesn't matter that he's gay and therefore its almost like the press has done the right thing in this case. Another part of me says that if it were a democrat in this position, the Republicans would be making a huge deal out of the gay angle. What do you think?

The other part of me that feels its sort of OK that this part has been left out of the story is that the whole thing plays right into the ultra-conservative right's ridiculous contention that homosexual=predator. Foley, like too many priests, has only served to reinforce a totally bogus stereotype. For that, I say .

Turns out former U.S. Rep. Mark Foley was sitting around in his underwear sending e-mails to teen boys about masturbation, or “spanking it” as the Republican Congressman calls it. Brian Ross at ABC News got hold of the messages and when Foley found out, he quit almost on the spot.
The truly sad thing about this is that Foley has only confirmed the worst Christian Right stereotypes about gay men, stereotypes that of course are largely untrue. But then again he’s never represented or embodied the larger gay population. He’s a gay man in the closet at the age of 52 — and a Republican, no less. We should have all expected this kind of thing.
Interesting information in those e-mails, though. Foley, for those inquiring minds that want to know, likes to masturbate with lotion and a towel and considers 7 1/2 inches a great penis size.
We learn this while he’s chatting with a teenager who’s mother is yelling at him about his homework.

They're not saying he's gay... because he's not. He's a pedophile, and there's a big difference between the two. The problem is the cover up - he's been told before about his "overly friendly" as it's now described emails and behavior toward the congressional pages. It's crazy that they've let him continue to have exposure with these kids when they know he's doing this.

The story has legs, at least on CNN this morning.
