    Digital SLR

    Hey,

I've been looking at some cameras, particularly the Nikon D70. Does anyone have any recommendations on anything? Also, the thing i'm really worried about is temperature/durability of these, I want to take it skiing a lot but don't want to break a lens or anything like that easily..can anyone shed some light on this aspect? I can get 10-15% off the nikon d70 through my boss, or I can get a canon eos at cost+10% through a friend, can't really decide on which would be best...I like the D70 but the eos would be a better deal for sure.

Canon vs nikon is personal preference, they are both good. I have a d100 and d200 which work very well for skiing. Get a good case that fits in your pack and you should be fine. I think the d200 is a metal body and moisture sealed which make it better, but I have never had a problem with the d100 which i don't belive has those features.

If you take care of it any of the cameras will work for a rec user - the Canon 400D/ Nikon D80 / Sony A100 are very similar.

If you want a more rugged durable body upgrade to a Canon 30D or Nikon D200. Plastic frames won't cut it.

CJ called it with regard to bodies. I just picked up a D80 last night, and while it is a lot of camera for 1K, it isn't anywhere close to the build of my buddies D200. It should still be fine as a replacement for my aging D100.

However, before you jump, check out the price and availability of the glass you want. While the A100 looks promising, it is my understanding the more interesting lens options are priced well above similar optics with a Nikon or Canon label. With the Zeiss name on the front, I don't find it surprising.

While previous posters are correct regarding durability of the D70 body, you may also want to consider battery life which is unsurpassed in the D70. My D70's battery would hold a charge forever. My D200's battery is reasonable but nothing like the D70.

here is a comparison done by a "pro" of the D80 vs the D200.
200 is pricey, and they says it right, when he says spend the extra $$$ on glass.
$$ spent for weight and metal, on a camera that goes obsolete fast anyway
    is sort of pointless.

So yeah, Nikon D80 all the way

    Ahem. . .

I should want to cook him a simple meal, but I shouldn't want to cut into him, to tear the flesh, to wear the flesh, to be born unto new worlds where his flesh becomes my key.
