Silverton Maggot Day - Which One?
OK, so it looks like the consortium of weirdos has decided on having the maggot fester in Colorado the last week of March, 3/24-4/1
Ass Zooming this, which day would work best for a day @ Silverton Mountain?
The tentative schdule involved a day at a front range place. I would think that the morass would be in Ahspen by Sunday. That would allow for a day at each of the 3 good Aspen areas and a flex day Wednesday either there, CB or Telluride. Or maybe some of us idiots will be in Ahspen that Saturday and out of there by Tuesday.
In any case, the optimal day to ski Silverton is always Thursday since they don't open it to the public Monday-Wednesday.
So, given these reasons, I'd say Thursday 3/29 would be the best day to ski there. They might be the wrong reasons, but there's the ones I'd use. This is during the GUIDED period. Cost will be negotiated to be a significant savings over the $129 normally charged.
Update: The cost will be $99 for the day.
Note that voting is a commitment to have your reservation and money in by 11/1. I'll provide the password and you'll use the SM website for reservations.Last edited by Buster Highmen; 09-05-2006 at 01:19 PM.

I thought unguided didn't start until 4/1? Can you work your mojo and get us unguided on the 29th?
-

My understanding is that 4/1 is the last day of guided. That's what's published on their website.
I'd really like to accommodate the desire for unguided on 3/29, but I just can't ask for that. Aaron and Jen bust their butts working to make the place run and I'm pretty sure they've filled out forms with the BLM and made a bunch of other arrangments to fit around that schedule. I'm really not in a place where I can ask that of them. So despite my blinding smile, suave demeanor, boundless sex appeal, godlike skiing abilities and a subtle psychomarketing game that would make Madison Avenue swoon, I'll follow the lead of the owners. I'd be willing to bet that if they can, they will without me whining, niggling and wheedling at them. Besides, when I work my mojo, things get sticky.
As for cost, I can guarantee a decent discount. But I need to see some numbers of folks that can fork the approximately $100+.
There's a bit more to this that I can't really divulge now. But if we commit enough folks, we will have a raging good time.

fwiw- The first day of unguided last year was Friday 3/31. They'll probably start on that Friday again this year 3/30. I'm down for whatever date the first day of unguided falls on.

09-01-2006, 08:38 AM #8OK, but read the website: http://www.silvertonmountain.com/ . As far as I can tell (though clearly both my reading comprehension and writing capabilities are of questionable merit) the summit is scheduled for the guided only interval.

Doing Silverton on that Thursday sounds good because of the snow factor, but if we do it then I think that kind of puts it into the middle of the Aspen get together. If we do Thursday I say...
3/24 Saturday Vail
3/25 Sunday Aspen
3/26 Monday Aspen
3/27 Tuesday Aspen
3/28 Wednesday Aspen
3/29 Thursday Silverton
3/30 Friday Telluride
3/31 Saturday Telluride
Or something like that."If there's a Starbucks, then you're probably fine."

Any interest by anyone on a Silverton / San Juan Snowcat combo?
These two outfits already do some package deals so I bet we could do pretty good here too. Like:
3/29 Thurs Silverton
3/30 Fri SJ Snowcat
-
09-01-2006, 08:51 AM #12That's a good idea too. I know Lurch said that was a good outfit, and I think HomerJay was raving about them also. I would be interested.

Unguided skiing returns (guides still available for those who want guided skiing at that time, reservations for guided skiing during this period available now). We will stay open longer if there is sufficient demand.

I would actually prefer to have a hard charging guide that knows the area well.
I just don’t want to farm turns or have a guide that has the reins on too tight. As you know a guide can make or break the day.
I have never been to Silverton, so I will defer to your expertise. If you say the 29ths the day, count me in!

I voted for the 29th or the 30th. Either day works for me. Saturday will be my last day in SW CO so as to make some progress back towards Boulder (This may be the case for some of the working stiffs from Denvoid as well). So really the only day I rule out is Sunday. (Squatch will be tagging along in my car, as far as I know, so I think where I am is where he'll be, which does not necessarily mean he will be snowcatting).
And yeah, snowcatting sounds sweet. I can commit to that and to whichever Silverton day you guys decide. Count me in. Any chance of switching to Thursday snowcatting and Friday inbounds at Silverton, though?
Buster, if you work your magic at Silverton, I'll take care of getting tix at T-ride or Crested Butte (whichever the masses would prefer).
Also: where else should I work on getting tix and for what day? And how many? Saturday sounds like a front range day, so I'll post a thread to see how many can actually commit to that day at Vail. If there's enough for a group buy, I'll go ahead and call Vail resorts to reserve those tix.
I'd like to get a more finalized itinerary for the week before doing other non-vail, non-aspen resorts.Days on snow 06-07: 3

09-02-2006, 09:48 AM #16That's a really good way to go - I was in on this trip a couple of years ago and it fully rocked. If you get enough people together to fill a cat at SJSC, you can have a really great day, with the guides taking you to the further stashes and letting you rip it to shreds. You get a better day than if you're in a mixed group. It was nice having the SJSC guides just say "go destroy it!" after the careful direction and required stacked turns at Silverton. And I believe we got a package price by booking at the same time as Silverton, but I didn't handle it so I forget how that deal went.

I'm interested in Silverton on Thurs the 29th and possibly a SJ snow cat day on the 30th (if it happens). Alternatively, Friday could be a backcountry day around Silverton.

09-02-2006, 06:36 PM #19Seconded (if I didn't do so already).
