Pocket Rocket...The Good, Bad and Ugly.
I have been looking into getting a pair of Pocket Rockets for several years now, but have yet to do it. I am just starting to get in the BC, but I have been skiing for 11 years with four years race experience. What are your opinions of this ski? Anything else you might suggest?

I would suggest using the search function.

what the fuck is with new people using other people's avatars? That confuses the shit out of me every time I see it. I guess I'm more of a visual person and pay more attention to avatars then names. We need a one person per avatar rule cause that shit is annoying.

Wouldn't it be the blue, the sad, and the noodly?

08-27-2006, 12:30 AM #8Sorry bud, I just picked one that was on the site. I guess when you only have military internet from the middle of the Iraq, its kind of restricted to do a lot of things... like get new pis or avators. Let me appoligize to you

To save you a lot of searching, the PR pretty much gets panned by the maggots. Foam core turns noodly way to quick, not durable ect. It isn't even made anymore but the 1080 is esentially the same ski. In reallity it is not that bad of a ski and if you look closely you will see it in more than a few tr's. There are many equal or better skis out there so when you get back from the sand get out and demo a bunch of them.

Thanks for the advice. As you can tell I am a bit out of the loop. All I can do now is watch my TGR videos over and again!

the "middle of Iraq" better not be Al Udeid, Ali Al Salem, or Balad.
I'm just sayin'...
post or PM me you APO/AE address and I can send the SKiing/PowMag/Freeskier buyer's guides your way. But basically you can do a whole lot better than the PR.

PR's can be amazing skis if you don't weigh much. They're still my favorite all around ski. The only people I find that don't like them are generally really heavy skiers or shitty skiers looking for something to blame for why they suck.

08-27-2006, 05:12 PM #13sorry, didn't mean to come down on you or anything, it's just weird that the system is set up to let new users choose from any of the custom avatars that people have uploaded. Like I said, it confuses me every time it happens. I wasn't saying you're a dick for choosing that one, I was saying it should be set up so that doesn't happen.

how much do you weigh? if you can get a great deal, it's not a bad ski for soft snow/BC days...it's relatively light for the width.
i skied a shit-ton of lines in the sierras with them, and i've climbed/skinned and skied several lines on denali with them.
but, the official TGR forum party line is that pocket rockets suck.

08-27-2006, 10:55 PM #17Still my favorite ski if really really hard snow or really really deep snow isn't going to be involved.

I think with your race background, you might like a stiffer ski. then again, alka has a strong race background and likes PRs. YMMV

I think I posted a question almost a year ago (maybe 9 months?) asking why people hated the PR so much. The thread was pretty long.
The advice I got last year: Try a bunch of different stuff. What did I do? Tried a bunch of different stuff. I still love the PR/1080 Gun, but there other similarly easy-to-ski skis out there.
Am I planning on buying a pair of 1080s this year for cheap? Yes.

Yeah, dunno why folks hate the PR's. I tip the scales at a buck-fifty, have had my PRs for a few years of hard skiing, I love them. Love. Them. Probably 'cause I'm a lightweight, huh? If I had to replace today, I'd go with the 1080 guns.

i think many folks don't like the fact that it's not a terribly durable ski (but foam core skis generally aren't durable). however, they are just fun/easy to ski and let you relax/screw around.
if you haven't noticed, there can be alot of "group-think" around here at times...and hating the PRs *might* be part of that.
they're not stiff race skis, they won't last as long as a pair of iggies, they won't tolerate lots of hucks from bigger guys, and they won't do great on ice due to the soft flex (and lack of torsional rigidity)...but can you have some good days on them in the right conditions? absolutely.

This is all good info, I weigh in around 197lbs so a very soft ski is not for me. However, back in the race days I loved my 10-3v's. I thought they were Gods gift to racing. When I was in Whistler last season I used the x-screams in some of the bowls. There was not a lot of fresh powder, but I didnt think they were fat enough for even that. I thought I Prs would be the next step.
