    jeep cherokee

i'm having an issue with my cherokee, not sure what it is. i was on rte. 89 half way between white river junction and stowe last friday and it started to overheat. so, i pull over and try to find a hotel to stay in for the night, with no luck (whole other issue) anyway, after cooling off (me and the jeep) i made it back to lebanon nh and sat in the ford dealership lot til 4 am waiting for a friend to come with his flat bed trailer. ended up not getting to bed till 8 am saturday morning. well, back to the issue, the computer went into some sort of limp mode, i had no power and the overflow tank was boiling/bubbling. towed the car to my dealership, and they put some aluminum "stuff" that is suppose to fill any gaps in the head (they feel that the head is cracked) well, i picked up the car and ran home toget some stuff b4 going to a friends house. while i was inside for ten minutes, i heard a sound outside and looked out to my car and saw a huge puddle of antifreeze, ran out and shut it off as soon as i could. well, the dealership (or mechanic now) says that it prolly only needs to have the head gasket replaced. this is all after dealing with them replacing the radiator and them not putting in enough antifreeze, bringing it back in to have them top off the coolant and still having low coolant after a few weeks (in there defense, the radiator did have a hole)

now the question is, do i have any recource with the dealership to have them foot some of the bill, since they said all i needed for a temporary fix was the aluminum "stuff" and the car overheated after they did that? i have had so many issues with this place, but i do get a discount there because my dad works there, i don't want to shoot my gift horse in the foot, but don't think that i should have to pay for all of a new gasket if that is truely what it needs and doesn't have a cracked head. thanks maggots for any help/ words of wisdom

First of all, do not take your vehicle to Jeep dealers for repairs. You think they're the only ones who have ever fixed a Jeep? They are overpriced and incompetent. A car with a blown head gasket spews white smoke out the exhaust. Does yours? Is it a six or eight cylinder? They put in StopLeak, which you could have bought at a parts store for $3. What did that cost you?

Second, why don't you talk to your dad?

Third, type your post in Word and use spellcheck, so you can learn how the big words are spelt.

edit: I have owned 5 Jeeps and currently have over 260K on mine now.

Specifically, which Jeep Cherokee? Precise model, model year, engine, approx mileage, would all be helpful.

Also, if I read your message correctly, you just said your dad works at the Jeep dealership where you had the last little repair done. If so -- go ask him to track down what's wrong.

Why did you leave your car idling for ten minutes?

i didn't say it was a jeep dealership, but i never knew that cherokees came with a v8.
    it is a 2000 cherokee 4.0 liter 108000 miles.
i left it idling because of previous problems when i have brought my car there and was just running in for a sec and it took longer than i thought, besides i would rather have a problem with it in the driveway and not a few miles down the road.

i guess because i didn't spell a word or two right i can get ripped on...

Flush and refill the whole cooling system, replace the thermostat while you're in there, replace the upper and lower radiator hoses too.

missed this part, but because of other problems and not wanting to get into the middle of things once again, my dad is out of the loop for giving me any more help with any issues regarding my jeep and the service department. to give you folks some insight, my jeep had the common problem of the gauge cluster going out, ie, the odometer will read "no bus", the tach and speedo will not work, and sometimes the whole thing (all gauges) will go out, but will still get the message of "no bus". after 2 YEARS and several appointments, they fixed it after replacing the connector to the back of the gauge cluster, twice, replacing the gauge cluster itself, and numerous hours of chasing wires to find a short, all under warrantee. at one point they even claimed it was the aftermarket stereo, but figured out that wasn't it because the sytem was not powered and the gauges went out. from the last time they replaced the connector, it has worked.
the only reason that i have brought it back is because i think that the radiator being replaced and the current issue might be linked and want them to fix for free, if so. that and i get free oil changes for as long as i own the vehicle

Sorry, I take the time to look up words so I communicate legibly and effectively, since it is the basis of our language.

i gess theyrs rilly no nede fur it tho if et herzt sumones fealins

However, since you learned to count your money, it just seems logical to learn to spell. But that's just me.

As for idler oveheats - fan clutch (not engaging), thermostat (stuck), water pump (leaves puddles), temp sensor (not working), head gasket (blown).

Replacing the head gasket on that thing only requires a torque wrench and the tightening pattern and the lbs to tighten to.
Head might need to be milled flat.

Edit: I had a 93 sport that had nightmare electrical problems that no one could ever fix after a million trips to the shop.
I traded it in while it was running right.

I fear your rig has something similar to what my Sport did: incurable electrical madness.
Especially when you say the computer and the guages geeked.
Could be the computer. Mechanics have a computer diagnostics doo-dad. Did they do that? It might have been built on a Monday.

Jeep electrical systems are notorious for shitting the bed. That's why I'm happy my 92 has absolutely nothing except power steering, just shy of 300k too now...

That is rare. Let us know how much you spend getting it fixed. I know every magor auto parts store out there sells rebuilt Heads, long blocks and short blocks. They are often better than new.

Getting a mechanic to install them correctly and at a reasonable price is another story.

Here's the link to the Jeep website... Saw one rolling around town the other day. Can't get it unless it's in the loaded Limted, but whatever... I'm almost torn between a newer diesel F-250 and one of these.

This is gonna be the jeep to get in 2007:

Diesel Invasion: Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel to Make 2007 Debut
    Date posted: 06-01-2006

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — In what may be a major step toward making diesel engines palatable to American buyers, the Chrysler Group on Thursday announced that it will offer a diesel-powered 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee in the first quarter of next year.

The diesel Grand Cherokee will feature the new 3.0-liter CRD engine, built by Mercedes-Benz, that produces 215 hp at 3,800 rpm and 376 pound-feet of torque at 1,600-2,800 rpm. It will return an estimated 19 mpg in city driving and 23 mpg on the highway, the company said in a statement.

The Grand Cherokee CRD will have a driving range of approximately 425 miles and a towing capacity of 7,400 pounds. The 3.0-liter CRD engine will be available on the Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, Limited, and Overland models.

The company said pricing will be announced closer to availability.

The Grand Cherokee CRD was prompted, in part, by positive public reaction to the 2005 Jeep Liberty with a 2.8-liter CRD engine. Chrysler said more than 11,000 diesel-powered Libertys have been sold since production began.

The Grand Cherokee CRD will be manufactured in Detroit; the 3.0-liter CRD engine is built in Germany.

What this means to you: This may be one of the breakthrough vehicles that makes diesel acceptable to U.S. consumers. Boo-yah!

They really should have tested the cooling system for combustion gases with a tool that looks like a turkey baster that you fill with a special fluid and insert into the radiator neck while the car runs, if any were present(the blue fluid turns yellow) then they should have done a leak down test to confirm which cylinder or cylinders were leaking. You can also pinpoint what is actually leaking with a leakdown test. This will tell you whether it is in fact the HG, Valves/Valve Seals, or Rings. So yeah they kind of fucked up, but that is what most HACK shops would most likely do. The question is, how did you get a BHG? Have you overheated before and warped the head? To save some cash you should learn how to work on it yourself. Any Jeep is pretty easy to work on. Go get yourself a chiltons or haynes manual and get at it. Or you can find the FSM online for most year Cherokees. I have the 2000 FSM in PDF format if you would like it. Join Jeepforum.com while your at it. Let us know how it works out.

I have driven both the 2.5L CRD and the 2.8L CRD.
The 2.5 CRD is a decent goer, peppier and better to drive than than the 2.4L bensine p.o.s. The 2.5CRD is nothing spectacular even for a euro, let alone for a merican used to V6/V8s.
The 2.8CRD is a bit different beast though. Powerfull engine and exelent torque making a exelent car even better to drive.
Feels more like the 3.7,but with even better torq on the lower rpm´s.
If I would have to buy a cherokee/liberty again, i definately would go for the 2.8CRD.

The floggings will continue until morale improves.

So....My Jeep (Cherokee Sport 4.0L 162K) has taken up the habit of leaving puddles here and there. I just replaced the upper and lower, and put in a new thermostat about a month ago. I am going to check my lower tonight, but I am beginning to think water pump, I bought the Jeep with 75K and have not messed with the pump yet. Any other possiblities? Sitting in traffic the other night I noticed it heating up, nothing crazy, I turned on the heater and it kept it below 220/230. I Don't really have a place to work on it where I am living now and I have gotten a few quotes for around $200 for the job.

Rumors of a Toyota diesel being available in the Tundra for '07 or '08, as well. Powerstrokes suck.

My Cherokee (92 limited, 166000 kms) started overheating the other day. It didn't leak when it was running, but as soon as I shut it off it just basically dumped all my coolant onto the driveway. I was already taking it in to get the t-case fluid changed, and it turned out I needed a new water pump. I also found out that the fuel filter I installed a few months ago was faulty and gas had been seeping out. After parts/labour, only ended up costing me $213. I thought I was going to be out at least $400 so it turned out better than I thought.

I get about 18-19 mpg highway in an almost 15 year old car, doesn't a new liberty diesel only getting 26 mpg highway still seem kind of shitty?

-edit: I have the 93 FSM manual on my computer at home, but I can't find the link from where I got it from since jeepforum won't let you search unless you are an upgraded member
