Landis will have hip replacement surgery after tour

Anybody see this? Big announcement regarding this during evening tour coverage. Such a bummer, it's obviously not affecting his riding too much and they say the pain is less on the bike than when he's walking, but still. He may be able to race again, or so they say, but who knows at what level. All the more reason to hope he gets this one.

Anyone understand the timing of the announcement?

The interviews for the Times all took place in March and April- why release the story after a week of the tour?
    It's idomatic, beatch.

Explain ahead of time why he'll blow up in the mountains and not finish on the podium?

I thought about that, but it didn't seem to bother him at TdG, although it may have during the Dauphine. I would say it's better to preface the mountains instead of saying afterwards, "oh yeah, I didn't race well because of a hip problem." Still, it will be interesting to see how he does, hopefully he can keep it together, he's obviously been racing strong on the flats.

Seems Floyd didn't want to go public until after the TdF started. I think it was his call in order to keep anything from preventing him from racing.
