Area between Squaw and Alpine to get lift
Whitewolf as it is known may soon be a reality for all those that have eyed it for days on end from both Squaw and Alpine. The owner of the land has obtained a permit (shady but it's a start) and is working on a lift. Keep an eye out for this legendary cliff band to be opend possibly in the next year or two if funding and permitting keep going well.

That's been in the works since I lived out there almost 10 years ago. What's taking so long?

I think I heard this story every year I was there, no offense. If Alta and Snowbird can, I don't see why they couldn't tho.

I think Huckasoreass wrote something about that for Powder awhile back--very cool looking thing. It's directly off the back of KT, right? (The view towards Alpine?)

yea- if you go skiers left right off the chair, you can see it all from the cat track that wraps around eagles nest. The chute that drops down right there is sooooo tempting almost all year. Springtime, it's a must-do.

that area is in the movie "Chapter 3". The terrain does look pretty amazing.

last thing i heard, the guy who owns that land was building the lift as a "private area". that means you could ride the lift by invite only...
plus he still has to get permission to RUN the lift after it is built. DOH!to all my friends, it's not the end
the earth has not swallowed me yet

-This has been in talks for decades. There is a shit load of complexities that has stopped the building of a whitewolf lift.
-The easiest way to get to Whitewolf is from Alpine or skinning up the 5 Lakes trail. There truly is some fricking sick terrain back there.
-The avy danger is high, I've had two buddies die in avy's back there. Because of a lot of windloaded areas and they fact that Alpine and Squaw rarely to AC.
-I'm betting it'll be a lot longer than a year to get Whitewolf open.

Apparently his permit was acquired late last year and is for 25 people on the chair at once. They guy had to put his house and life insurance up to acquire the permit.
Supposedly he has already built a cement pad for the top of the lift close to the top of KT.
This is all coming from the montain manager of Alpine
Hopefully this will give some kind of accessto Whitewolf even if it never does link Alpine and Squaw.

its a sweet area, we usually access it from alpine, easier than skinning up from 5 lakes (and squaw has closed boundries, so can't "get there from here")...but its private land, and i have always wondered where the boundry is anyway....we usually just ski it in the spring. about 3 years ago, i hit it solo (april, snow pak was bomber, that's why i decided to go solo), and as i dropped into the flats after skiing the chute, trying to make my way to the AM access road to hitch back to the 'lot, the owner comes running up to me "hey, hey...wait a minute".....i was busted...but he was cool, we talked about the terrain, skiing, etc, and he sent me on my way with a big smile on my face after dropping that chute...
i too have heard the rumors over the years....i think it will be a private chair lift on private land if and when he ever gets it up and running and approved.....

01-22-2004, 08:25 PM #17Best friends, It's a long ass story but I was the kid on the news that decided not to go at the last second. I was on the chair with them before they went off the backside.Originally posted by Greydon Clark

Technically it wasn't Whitewolf but is off the backside of Squaw to the head of the 5 likes trail.
And yes I'll confirm the existence of a cement pad at the top of KT. We've all been wondering what it was. We thought it was the platform of a new ski patrol shack.
