TR: Mount Adams, False Summit 6.18.06
Mount Adams – a return to the sufferfest
06.18.2006

False Summit/Pikers Peak @ 11,657 feet
Road Closure starting point @ 4,500 feet
Ascent: 7,157 vertical feet (6,300 skiable)
Mileage: 18 miles round trip
{a few more pics later from the magic of zbo's camera phone}
Mount Adams- Southern Flank Exposed
Our intended destination- the exquisite 35-40 degree consistent SW Chutes off the False Summit, a notch just below the center peak on left
(Unfortunately, a slight route change was necessary to the South facing rib as the wind/cold was not allowing the SW chutes to thaw)
Also of note- for both descent options are crevasse free, whereas other exposures from SE to N to W are not
Last July- it was perfect weather that Adams turned into my own personal suck fest (http://tetongravity.com/forums/showt...ighlight=Adams)
But this time around, the sky would cooperate. We hoped.
The second tallest peak in Washington, Mount Adams provides both technical and non-technical ascents.
The South Rib, or "South Climb" is nothing more than just a brutal grunt. Like the statement says on your rearview mirror,
"Objects may appear closer than they seem." Volcanoes and their massive size & vertical just the opposite is true.
I kept thinking to myself "Object that appears is not closer than it seems"
The Cascade's massive snowpack (far from melting) kept the access road closed indefinitely though the end of the month.
On the plus side, it meant a longer descent- but on the downside a much more challenging ascent. Travel time was adjusted
and after a short nap and some Starbucks Double Shots, we left car camp at 2am
With deep snow still covering the Cold Springs access road/campground,
we were treated to 3 miles (6 round trip) and 1,000 vertical of ‘extra credit’
Early morning light hits the East Ridge
A much better site when your goal enters your viewpoint
The crunchy snow made it easier (and more comfortable might I add) to pull a Rusty Nails and “sneaker-walk” the first 5000 feet.
Zbo adjusts the Mount Adams stairmaster to the next incline.
Views of Mt Hood & Saint Helens awakening
Hood looking south
Saint Helens
That is what I had hoped for last year, but Adams had different plans
Last Year: Mount Adams- July 2005
This year (similar proximity)
Saint Helens again further uphill
A most enduring love-hate relationship – Stairmaster to 30 degrees please
Suksdorf Ridge (or as I like to refer to it as “Sucks Ass Ridge”)
Taking a break half way up the Ridge- this is pretty much where I bonked
Above 10,000 feet, the slope became tricky. Wind ensured this ice would not melt into that buttery corn.
Zbo trying to stay in the boot pack
View from the top of the False Summit/Pikers Peak @11,657 feet
6300 vertical feet of fun-degree skiing begins here!
It may have taken me what seemed like forever to get here- but I guess I lucked out.
With the Ice-Capped Summit looming a mere 700 feet above, conditions were not favorable.
We intended to begin our ski from the true Summit of Adams (12,276 feet; 3742m),
but the icy conditions, along with the nice bonking I took on the last ridge allowed us to be content.
Most importantly, our descent routes began from the False Summit and did not require any further hiking
Winds were strong and cold temps made sure the SW Chutes & Summit would be “no-nintendo” today. The glare…after 12pm
Before we could harvest the corn, there was an ice sculpting contest to take care of
I’m sure the chatter beneath my skis was enough to elicit questions of doubt in the minds of those still trudging the uphill nearby
Zbo puts on a “how to recover on ice” clinic
Proper “Slip” technique
“Trampoline your ass” technique
“Stand up and spray, Homey”
After the first 1,000 feet ice skating through winter, corn found the Fall line
Zbo: “The best damn corn snow I’ve ever skied”
For some Live Action Zbo, click here:
or the shaky camera angle here:
So happy, Zbo with the “mustache point” toward Mt. Hood
Inspired by either the smooth, suncup free corn- or the hot Nebraskan chick we passed on the 5, Zbo husks at will
Proper Harvest with still much more left to go
And the road comes to an end. Fin!

Most excellent. Wish I could've joined you, but father's day and all...
And don't worry, by the next time you go Adams will be a resort.

Congrats on a nice ski. Glad the weather held out for you. Was Greydon holding the camera? I did not see his pasty ass in any photos.
