500+ inches of light and dry pow. 60+ days maybe 70 (lost count at 17) and most felt like I was living in a cartoon. Road trips to ski with maggots at the end of the season. Yeah, I am living my dream now. What took me so long to finally do it? Dunno? BTW, fuck money!

    This is priceless.

for me, i guess the dream has been much more about how i'm living and in which direction i'm headed. i moved out west to become a school teacher and to ski bigger mountains. school just ended for the summer, and now i've got a few months in a beautiful environment to relax and enjoy. with one year of teaching under my belt, i'm sure that next year will be more relaxed and manageable.

basically, with the right perspective i think the dream is always evolving but never seems too far out of reach.
Hey, glad to hear everything's working out for ya! East coast life can sometimes be a bit rough on the skier's soul...

    I feel I am.

I am healthy, my kids are good (knock on wood), I enjoy what I do for a living very much, live near Tahoe minutes from many ski resorts, ski a heck of a lot, make ample money, female companionship is usually present, and most importantly I'm not jonged too much on TGR.

I have a good paying job in the NYC area, with a very secure future, and excellent benefits.

To many people around the NYC area, that's the dream. Not really feeling it though, not at all.

I have a dream; to be recognised & respected for my talents & accomplishments & be able to make a decent living at it.

Since that's about as probable as Ellen Degeneres give a BJ siminar or learning to fart all 26 Chinese alphabets in their dialects,I'll go for finding a cool woman that rips & skiing powder with her ala Downhill Racer.I actually got to do that in May @ Loveland with this patroller chick I met on Super Bowl.

I thought we were all retired dentists... living the dream based on plaque, gingivitis, porcelain veneers and invisalign. Who let these ski bums in the door?

Jong here. Here's a question: If you lived near tahoe with a job that allowed you to ski 2-3 days a week, would you give it up to move to So-Cal and take a job that could make you enough money to retire in 10 years? I'm 35 now and I am all torn up over the decision. Play now and retire in 20-25 years, or work my ass off with little free time and be done, and I mean done, in 10. Advice requested...

Live now! Life is way too precious to wait! And get a night job so you can ski more than 2-3 days a week. Let the conditions dictate when to ski, not the job! My $.02!

Enlosandes- Thanks for the reply. Put a few beers in me and the decision seems easy...play now. When I am sober, the draw of one of the best jobs in the country for my field is enticing. I feel like I live two lives: One consisting of chicks, beer and fun, the other of a profession that is rewarding and that I am good at. Retiring at 45 and fucking around full time sounds killer assuming my body holds up. By the way, I don't have a wife or kids to muddle my decision.

Headed up to Whistler on Saturday for a week of ski camps in the morning and bike park in the afternoon, followed by partying with super duper ski stars all night--on the company card. I hope I dont wake up from this dream

Totally not living it...but for the first time in my life, I can actually see it as a dot on the horizon.

Tough call -- and I think you certainly need to listen to yourself more than a bunch of (well-intentioned) folks on the internet...

But I would say that if you are living in S. Cal, you are going to be working hard (as you say), and the odds are that you will meet a partner/future spouse/friends who are more into warm-weather activities rather than die-hard skiers. I'm certainly not saying that those people don't exist -- there are plenty of them.... It's just that the chances of you being able to meet them when you are not making the trek to Mammoth every weekend and are mostly in the local area, doing warm weather recreation when you can steal some time from work...well, they're slim.

Then, when another 10 years have passed you by and your spouse & friends are mostly focused on the warm-weather stuff (not making a judgment here), it will be relatively harder for you to move away to colder environs.

I say live now. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?

Personally, I lived in a ski town after college for a while, then I wound up working one of those 100-hours-a-week jobs and later start a business.... I gave it up to be able to still work extremely hard at a job that is rewarding, yet essentially set my own hours and live where I want to.

Things came full circle in many ways.

While I couldn't be happier than where I am now, my "regret" is that I now know I probably could have/should have made it happen even sooner.

That said, I think that had I lived in a ski town straight through, I would have gone nuts and not experienced much more of the world, much more of life and culture that just don't exist in the same way here. I love living in a small mountain town -- there's nowhere else I'd rather be... but I love HAVING lived (past tense) in other places.

Sounds like you're in a position where you've had other experiences and can move to the mountain town and make it work. If you were 21, I still might say move to the mtn town -- but it would be with the idea that you'll move away after a while to gain those other experiences.

    Just my $0.02.

Is it time to pinch another wedge from the collective loaf? A smegmatic squeezling rubbed off in the anonymous stall of the web? Well shure.

What is the dream, objective of those mice in jackboots seeking to stomp out imagination?

The best thing about dreams is that they change as long as you let them.

Personally, I'm having to make some hard choices now about living, trying to excel at living in a kitchen remodel with 2 little kids and re-entering the full time jawb frame. Executing la vie with elan has been a trying grasp at the wind of late. But there are rewards just a bit down the road at what I hope is not an Archimedian halfway remaining distance.

Dreams are mostly images, except perhaps for those of a more olifactory nature than I.

And while the images of pow days across the pond, high in the San Juans or here in the squooshy PNW factor highly in the library of visions, the one that grips me most deeply now are my kids. Last Saturday, we drove down our driveway with them poking their heads out of the sunroof, laughing, wind in their hair, blearing their eyes, shrieking with unbridled glee. And somehow, when it all comes to pass and I sit at the brink of it all, carefully enumerating the last vestiges of a poorly cultivated dignity, I'll bet it's not the visions of pow, glade, ridge, couloir or bowl that I'll savor. I'll bet it'll be several sets of blue, clear eyes, tousled manes and glowing souls.

    I already do.

Southern California? Are you kidding? No way. Tahoe is like no other. If it's only the money that drives you, then socal might be a good bet. I just look at it like I'm trading my early retirement for being able to "play" during the good years. I don't want to "finally" be in a comfortable position to ski everyday at the ripe age of sixty...... I play now.

    Aaah...

The simple, honest answer that so many choke on. It's so straightforward and puts the responsibility on ... you. Damn, you should have told a lie, and made people feel better about not doing it.
