Be gentle Alta, it is our first time

A small crew of us are heading to Utah next week (1/5-1/10) to find out what all the fuss is about. A mix of Tahoe, Seattle and Montana skiers, none of whom have skied Utah before.

First, I have to say that I am now almost too excited to type.

Second, would love any suggestions on things not to miss at Alta.

Third, would appreciate any advice on good backcountry day trips in the area, especially considering the avy conditions right now (i.e. I prefer not to die).

Fourth, anyone going to be out during the week, would love to hook up for some turns (or not) and/or beers.

    Peace

If you don't want to die in the b/c, I would probably say any backyard is fine. There might actually be some good day trips, but I'll have to see the forecast before then.

Everyone will be out, wildcat, 8:30 a.m. for Xover, 8:45 for everyone else.

Fargin brilliant. "Welcome to X-over world where the lines are short and the consequences large. Featured attractions today are "The Pain Train" and "Bad News Bombhole". As always you must be at least 1 phUnk tall to ride..."

i dont understand this thread, but should i fly out JANUARY 9-11??

i cannot do the mini in FEBRUARY because, although it would have been PERFECT (my b-day is 2/7), my parents have announced (sans invitation) that they will be coming to visit me here in SF feb. 5-9.

5 days in Alta/Snowbird? You'll barely scratch the surface INBOUNDS. I wouldn't worry about OB trips unless you've got the shortest attention span in the world. We're talking 5000 acres of TOUGH skiing between the two of them.

Dammit, Britney, weren't you informed that your presence is required at the Tram Bar on the 6th to do the "Avatar Dance?"

And who's going to be serving the Hotdogs now...??

    BTW - <5 weeks, but who's counting.

What's not to understand. Yeah you should fly out, Tele-dee won't be here, but Tele-dum is, that's reason enough for anyone.

I'll second this...I was at Alta for three days a week after a 30" storm and was still finding knee to waist deep stuff. And this was during last year's drought. <tourist>Mmmm...little Vail</tourist>. The 30min. (inbounds) hike I did was more for the novelty than anything else, although the untracked was a good reward.

Two...more...weeks!!! Can't WAIT to get out there again! Plus an end of Feb trip to Silverton...woohoo!

I don't think so, I wouldn't worry about that too much, yet anyway.

EDIT: Salt lake is 43 and rainy, that means the resorts are in the 20's and snowy. You're all good mang.
