Basic dillema: Use Markers or sacrifice my Mantra's

I bought a pair of used Mantra's on gear swap. Got what I thought was a decent deal; they were mounted twice, which I was somewhat concerned about, but I thought it could be worked around. Well, it can't. Not with my Look bindings anyway. I trust the shop's technical opinion; he showed me how each possibility didn't work.

Now I'm left with the option of putting Markers on, or trying to resell the ski, which could be a problem considering the fact that I had one.

So pissed at myself right now for succumbing to the temptation of a deal on a ski I really wanted.

Can you get ahold of some some MRRs? Those are semi-okay, right? I bet someone has some hanging around but is embarrassed to put them in Gear Swap.

edit: don't know if they have the same mount pattern or not.

what exactly is the problem. Could it be fixed by mounting a binding for a smaller boot size? 'cause then I might be interested.

Probably not; unless your boot is smaller than a 25.

Problem is with the Looks having a shorter pattern than the markers, the back back holes would interfere with the front back holes if you mount them 3 cm back.

I don't really want to mount them forward because they're 177's and at least until I move out west they're my powder skis.

They popped up and I pounced on them. I'm not sure why the person sold them. I was surprised to see a used pair for sale.

I have the same issue with two pairs of exploders, when I bought them they'd already been drilled to death (twice and right where I'd want to put some looks). They both for some uber-Euro reason have Comp 1400. I don't have too much issue with them. I know the mags hate on them. I know some really respectable skiers representing in Swidzerland that are skiing on Markers. Maybe it's just a Yurp USovA issue with the manufacturing or conditions???

OK Mags think they suck, but all the evidence against them is anecdotal, there are far more positive and content owners.

I ski mine on 12/13 and never have an issue, they do what they do. Reading TGR has made me pray a little more, but the risk is kinda nice.

How many of you guys are actually skiing over a 12? There seems to be a large propensity towards high DIN binders on this board. Sure I wanna stay on my skis too, and I do, but I keep my cock in my pants too.

Please don't think I'm disrespecting ANY of you that do ski on beefy binders, especially if you need them

Just wondering if it's a swing thing too?

I'll trade you some undrilled V-Pro 190s for your mantras.

This Marker shit is tedious. Jesus, millions of people ski on them, including me, and I've never had a single issue with them anymore than the Looks, Tyrolias, and Salomons I also use. I'm amazed at how concerned everybody is here with Markers being uncool. It's weird, like eighth grade, or the rednecks who put the little "Calvin pissing on Ford / Chevy / Dodge" stickers in their window. If that's the only thing that works on a great ski like yours, then use it.

listen markers suck for hucking and shit, they lack elasticity. Of course, given the ahem... age and ahem... stature of some mags, I doubt everyone's skiing style warrants ranting.

bottom line. Markers suck, if you like them fine, just shut up about it.

get some p18s they're mounting pattern is shorter in the back. check it out.

Isn't there a riser that would help you get a better bite after plugging the holes? Shape and glass a piece of 1/4" plywood, buckle it onto the ski and mount through it.
OR
Plug the holes with steel wool, wood, and epoxy, mark the holes with the jig, then drill with a drill press if you have to, so you don't slip into the old holes.

shmerham, oddly enough my binding mounts have been creeping forward, I wouldn't be afraid of going forward on the Mantras, I went +1.5 on my Powder Plus and +1 on my Heli Daddies(both 180's) and so far didn't notice any problems. I was expecting all sorts of instability/tip dive/other undesirable things but both skis have been great and as an added bonus both skis come around a little quicker in the tight spots the EC is famous for

Can't say I have hard facts and data just personal observation of high end skiers on different products. Skied WC Freestyle for 3 years and coached for 5 after that and almost every knee injury to a competitor was a Salomon outfitted skier. The only knee injury I ever had was during the 3 years I skied the product and that was a fall caused by a prerelease on one leg (heel)and then a no release on the other(toe). I've been on the dreaded "m" brand for the past ten seasons with no issues.....not free either. So sorry for the rant just a little tired of people beating up a decent product that works so they can be on the bandwagon. BTW I like Rossi/look but hate the Tyro's so I guess I got my own prejudices as well.

wstdeep, that's a real pretty story. it's all anecdotal and doesn't prove a thing.

if skiing your mantras (or any other ski) with markers means it won't ruin your ski, ski em.

if you can, avoid buying them in the first place and maybe marker will one day get their shit together.

the main beef with marker here is that over time, the release mechanism doesn't hold up. if you are a good little boy and get them shop tested ever couple of months i'm sure they'd be fine.

fwiw, i've had more pre-release issues with 912 tis than with some 1400 free's that i have

Yep, the Marker Free team editions I had were sweet (even had a bikini-chick graphic where the DIN scale is), only their 18-30 scale would probably keep most people from choosing them (if they could even find them for sale). I've never prereleased from those binders set at 22. I have however had a bunch of issues with Comp1400's set at 12-13. But hey, people are just different I guess. I've had my ass handed to me by 65kilo punks skiing lightweight jib binders set at 8, something that I could never pull off.
