practice beacons
Just got my first beacon!!! a new tracker
but I live on the EC and there is no beacon basin anywhere. Does anybody sell a transmit only device that I could use to practice??For sure, you have to be lost to find a place that can't be found, elseways everyone would know where it was

I have two beacons, one with a cracked case (thanks TSA!). Seems to work okay, but I don't want to use it for anything other than practice. Maybe we can get together some time.

Pieps sells the "Powder Pieps" a transmit only unit. It can be found for $70 or so bucks. Otherwise check eBay for used items.

Hey Dere,
Are you going exploring all the "lost" ski areas then ?
You should head over to SnowJournal and post your query there http://snowjournal.com/index.php A Very New England, NY, EC type of place (no room for Westies)

I got an older pieps analog beacon (457) here on the forums that makes a good practice beacon for $75.

Laser...
Your post looking for a junker beacon was a while ago, but..
If you're still looking for one and are near Burlington, I think outdoor gear exchange had a pretty cheap beater on consignment. I'd be down to do some practicing too if you're interested in meeting up. I should have a transciever by the end of the week, so PM me if interested.

If I'm teaching outdoors, I'll leave the transmit traniner on regular (normal = full transmit). If I'm indoors in a classroom, I'll tune it down to smaller, so that I can teach about flux line searches (i.e., how your digital transceiver works, etc...).

Good runs when you get them.
