Thread: ipod nano is pissing me off

Is there a way to download my ipod contents onto my work laptop?

Problem:
ipod was loaded using my personal laptop, which has all my CDs, mp3s, etc.

Personal laptop is out of commission, Work laptop only has about 10% of the mp3s as my personal laptop.

I don't want to reload all my CDs onto my work laptop. It would be easier to download ipod contents onto my work laptop.

Doesn't it present itself to the computer as a drive via USB? Then you drag and drop. If not then Apple is gay.

you cant move files from an ipod to the hd. i guess it is some copyright bullshit. look for a program called ipod rip, it is a free trial download, it works well on a mac, dont know about pc.

Apple is most gat in this way. They try to maintain a one i-pod>i cpu deal. It can be beat. Pu, do you have i-tunes on the work pc? If so in should recognize the ipod then you can drag an drop to the HD. I started a thread were I got all kinds of advise. Find that. Good to know as I am researching MPgay players right now. I thought the whole point of these things were that they were portable hard drives, basically.

The ipod download used to be a feature in iTunes, but Apple turned it off (disguised as an update) to appease the cocksmoking RIAA assholes.

Right now there is only a one-way sync between itunes and ipod.

I don't have my ipod USB cable with me now. I'll post back when I figure this out.

Apple had to make a choice, either turn off this feature and fill the iTunes Music Store with music from the major labels or keep this feature turned on and have no music store at all. Really can you blame them?

There is a multitude of 3rd party programs that allow you to accomplish this anyway. So if you're too lazy to do some basic research, like Pu has done, then I have no sympathy for you.

That's what I used for the same thing.

Ephpod works pretty sweet for me.

If the music you loaded onto the iPod was mp3s to begin with, you can get them off the iPod...you just have to work around the Apple software. Like I said, assuming this was mp3s that you imported into iTunes, and then loaded, follow these steps:

1) plug iPod into computer
2) bring up Windows Explorer
3) click on "Tools" -> "Folder Options"
4) click on the "View" tab and then click on "Show hidden files and folders"
5) Click "OK"
(This is where things get hazy for me...I've emailed friends about how to do this, but I generally have my iPod plugged in and type while I do it. No iPod cable with me right now, so this is from memory)
6) You should be able to navigate through the iPod now, even into folders that are supposed to be hidden. Buried in there is a series of folders that contain your mp3s.

You other option is:

1) Click on the Start button and initiate a file search (might need to be an advanced search)
2) Search on your iPod for "*.mp3" files (I think I've tried it this way as well and found them)

Try Copypod (www.copypod.net) Similar to ipodcopy that dropinskiout posted. Also gives you a trial period to check out the software. It's nice because it rips everything to one folder on your hard drive (preserving filenames, etc).

Another popular, completely free option is the ml iPod plugin for WinAMP (http://mlipod.com). Install Winamp, the plugin, attach the ipod, and you can copy the files to your hard drive from there.

I use winamp/ml iPod exclusively now (fuck iTunes). It was written by the community for the exact purpose that your describing. It's your iPod, and Apple nor the RIAA should tell you how you can use it.

I used Senuti to load from a number of different ipods onto one new computer.

Yup, then you can just search the "music" folder that's hidden for specific stuff, or copy off the whole folder. Itunes will get the ID tags even though the filenames are messed up by the ipod.

PodUtil worked like a champ for me, I was given a loaded ipod by a friend who had upgraded and I downloaded it's contents to itunes in a few minutes. Itunes won't play the songs that he bought from itunes because they are copy-protected, but that was only a couple dozen tunes so I haven't bothered trying to find a work-around.

Free, and it worked perfectly.

Thanks for the advice and recommendations. If I find that USB cord I'll update you guys.
