Thread: Skis to replace G4's

I just took the wax off my G4's and they're in worst shape then I remember puting them away last year. Don't think they're gonna make it through another season of full time use but they're still usable as rock skis. So what should I be looking at to repalce them? I picked up the All-For-One pass so I'm gonna be spending most of my days at K-mart where it's gonna be a steady diet of bumps, trees and icy groomers. I'm not much into park at all but I've seen a bunch of people riding PE's I'm also considering Karmas


kinda pissed that I missed the steep and cheap for M:EX's would have been a perfect fit

The PE's arent a bad ski either, and can probably find them pretty cheap.

I've been struggling with this decision as well. Thought about the karma but think I want to go up in width more. I was likely going to pick up a Legend 8800. As for missing the M:EX, I didn't think it skied anything like the G4 and was pretty unhappy with it when I rode it.

Yeah but I'm not sure I wanna pay $600 for a pair of Karmas when I could get a pair of PE's for $360

as for big I wasn't thrilled with the 178's I skied, just felt lifeless, dunno if it was just me

If you are really set on M:EX's, Backcountry.com still has a good deal (not as great as snc) on the M:EX's.


In fact, you might call them and ask for the snc price. Note: they have 39 pairs on hand.

Stockli Asteroids/SS. I made the switch and like them a lot.

really leaning hard towards the Public Enemy's, I'm not crazy about the graphics but the 118-85-109 shape looks about what I'm after. I'll probably be trading away some hard snow performance but I should "hopefully" gain some manuverability in tight spaces. Anyone have a chance to ski the new fatter PE's wanna offer up a review?

I went from 188 G4s straight to the Stiff Bros and love 'em. Yes, DJ, they're a very different breed, but the transition worked very, very well for me. They're both damp, sandwich constructed, and have about the same stiffness. However, they're entirely different beasts in the powder and crud. The Bros are loads lighter, so the Bros turn quicker, and are slightly easier in bumps and trees.

If you really want a ski that is as close to G4 as possible, I think the stöckli asteroids is the best advice so far. Even though the dimensions are almost the same on the Public Enemy's, I believe that it is a totally different ski, and I would strongly recommend trying them before bying them. The jibbing skis are generally not as good skiing wise, as low weigth is a big factor for that kind of stuff. If you are after the G4 super edge hold freight train feel, I cannot imagine the the PE's will do it for you (this is hearsay as I have never skied the PE's). Both G4's and Asterroids are sandwich construction with metal in it (=stability, durability and edgehold). Other suggestions in this range of ski would be the Blizzard titan eight (116-80-106, sandwich with titan construction, tallest is 175 cm??) or Elan M777 (117-87-107, in lengths 176, 184 cm and 192 cm skis).

Another question is whether you really want a G4 kind of ski. In my opinion it is a great piste ski, but is lacking quite a bit off-piste.

Nothing around like it any more - something like Voelkl AC4, Fischer AMC 79 or MAUNGA is probably as close as you can get but not entirely the same.

yeah I know I'm gonna give something up changing from a fat-GS type ski like a G4 to a twin tip-park ski but when I got the G4's I was skiing mostly at places like Whiteface, Gore and Jiminy Peak where it was mainy steep icy groomers with a little bit of trees thrown in for variety. I'm thinking at K-Mart I'm going to be seeing a lot more trees and bumps, since the best way to avoid the crowds is to stay OFF the groomers

Why not just look for a new pair of AX4? I saw some guy with new G41 (198) for $299. I would even consider Exploders. If you have $$ to burn, look to AC4 or Mantras.

Another vote for the Stockli DP/SS. It is a bit quicker than the G4 (186 vs 188) and feels smoother to me. More top end as well.

Also agree that is is more of an on-piste ski, especially when mounted at the factory mark; maybe mounting them fruther back would keep the tips up more.

A fabulous ski though.

I would also consider a Bro or Mantra.

I think PE's would be the best for tight trees.
You definately want to be able to make some quick oh shit turns.

much love for them, best skis I've ever owned but I think they're done what's sad is that unless I can find a PS Plate I don't think there's room to fit another mount on em to use em as rock skis

got a chance to shop flex a new pair of 174 PE's against a 177 Karma and I was pretty impressed with the PE, much stiffer overall then I was expecting, tip through underfoot is really stiff but last 12 inches of the tail is VERY soft. Surprisingly Karmas weren't really that impressive, overall they felt really soft, not noodle soft but definately not as burly as the Public Enemy. if I can hook up the 10% discount from BC I think a pair of 179's Enemys are gonna be heading my way

If they were good, I'd buy another pair. It's one of the best skis out there.

On "the day after" a storm (or 9:30 AM at K-Mart) you won't be able to do gs turns through crud bumps on a groomer with the PE's methinks.

PE's will be a noodle in comp to thge G4. My suggestions are:
-Volkl Supersport Allstar
-Volkl Karma (this shit gotta beat the PE's)
-Fischer AMC 79
-What Buster said

Hell make sure you try the Volkl Superspeeds, which is the best ice/groomer carving ski I have ever been on.
