Thread: A little help? Avi Encyclopedia

So I'm still putting togrther this online avalanche encyclopedia and I think it really could use more pics. I figure you guys in here are a better resource for shots that the traditional avalanche community. So if you have (own) some quality digital shots related to any of the topics, and don't mind donating the rights to them for this puropse, email them to me at sarge@aros.net. When finished it will be linked to by all the forecast centers in the US through the National Avalanche Center. If you have to have a photo credit, give me the info, and I'll insert it. Thanks.

i don't have access to my photos until i get back home (another week or so)but if you can copy and past any of mine that are online. if you want high res just let me know. trackhead may have some good pics and possibly footage also.

if you have a list or more specific set of subjects i might be able to remember a few that would work well for you.


also, try t-tips avy forum. there's no end to the photo documentation that some of those guys will do. good luck anyway

one thing i noticed though, the only terms concerned with rescue were transceiver and probe. i realize there is a limited scope to this glossary but i def think that at the very least "hasty search" would be defined.

Nesta. I agree. Right now I'm just starting with the terms that the NAC had before. I see this as being very dynamic the first few years with additional terms and content being added. Thanks for the feedback.

sarge - here's one for you I posted on Biglines last year I thought I'd share because it's so unique - perc columns between a couple of m/f crusts that we excavated from a pit during an AAI Level 2 class - the facets in between the columns just blew right out - I'll email it too

Especially the animations were clear and informative.

In some Terms (f.e.windslab) there was a quite a big amount of info put in a "french lines", wich can make it a bit confusing to read.
Perhaps some of the paragraphs in a bigger font or bold?


But, cant wait the site to expand!

What are you looking for in terms of pics.? What resolution would you like? and Can you use any mpegs?

What I'm looking for are pics that will help clarify any of the subjects in the glossary list. That could include more pics of avalanches and the aftermath, shots of snow forms like depth hoar, surface hoar, gruapel. Shots of rescues. Shots if rain and sun crusts. Sluffs and point releases. Maybe I could even encode some short videos in flash to throw in there. This is a community resource so anything that helps make things more clear.

As far as mpegs, I can take just about any format. Please edit shots down to something specific. Thanks!

Sarge, you're web-based stuff is amazing. What does one need to do to use your stuff for avy education classes? The illustrations prove the old adage, "a picture is worth a thousand words". Well done.

I'm loving the info on the site... just one slight disagreement:

"Skinning:

An ancient method of backcountry travel rendered ineffective since the advent of the helicopter. This practice is still utilized by some."

Ineffective? For who? For a large percentage of backcountry travelling, this is the only economical method for travelling beyond the ski resort ropes. I'd rather say something along the lines of: An effective natural method for alpine enthusiasts to access backcountry terrain.

Or something along those lines...

I've been talking with Bruce Tremper about possibly developing some animated education modules for avi instruction. I think with some financial support from the National Avalanche Center, Local Forecast Centers, and possibly private contributions we could make something very useful. It would need to be modular so educators can taylor each animation into their presentation format. I'm trying to slowly introduce these new forms of media into the avalanche community as time and budget allow. If the Avi Bill gets passed it could go a long way towards funding all of these types of projects.

it's kinda like taking a heli ride from wasatch powder bird's pad to the base of mt superior's south ridge, which btw is only about 500 yards and maybe 30' elev gain. that's for snowbird's new mountaineering program. it only costs 8 grand for anyone interested.

I didn't know the full background to the website...

For all I knew, it was a website designed by rich people, for rich people, and most likely ignored by rich people.

Now that I know, I'm gonna go and try to find some more easter eggs.

Talked to Sarge on the phone today, and he told me that the Avalanche Encyclopedia he's been working on with Bruce Tremper at UAC is now available on the web.
