Help getting a seasonal ski job in NZ for our summer?
I looked for a NZ thread and couldn't find one???
Hey, my 19 year old son is looking for a June-July-August ski industry gig in the southern hemisphere. He is PSIA level 1 instructor with several years experience teaching at our local ski area here in NH. Finishing freshman year studying engineering. He goes to university in Virginia (Virginia Tech) and is really wanting to get some skiing in this year.
His Spanish is good, he earned the Massachusetts seal of biliteracy. Native Italian speaker (his mom is Italian and we lived there off and on). He is sending job applications out but I was looking if anyone here knew anyone that might lead to some sort of introduction. Also, if you can provide some input on good employers (and ones to avoid) that would be helpful. He is also applying in Chile/Argentina.
We lived in Christchurch for most of a year when he was in elementary school (Ilam school!) so he has visited the ski areas like Hutt, Cheeseman and Porter. Hoping he can get back there.
I am proud to report that my son is a mag-in-training!Last edited by jhyatt; 01-31-2024 at 05:56 AM.

not at a ski area, but this place advertises in the ski area management classifieds every year for snowmakers…

occasionally you’ll see ads for other southern Hemisphere jobs on that site also.

Not much skiing/instructing in the Southern Hemisphere in May/June.
Might be better to work a Camp at Hood or Whistler.

Nice editing out May, but it doesn’t change the fact that there’s not much work in June.
They may show up in June, but they aren’t getting paid.

Used to be that level 1 wasn't really a ticket you could teach internationally with (you were supposed to have a level 2). That may have changed. It shouldn't dissuade him from trying, but may be good to try a few strategies (liftie, server, dishwasher) if he really wants to get there.

Funny that elsewhere has a level 2 bar to entry where here in the US at the big resorts a pulse is all that's needed to teach.
