Anybody in SLC got a speed gun I can borrow?

I gotta help my kid do his science project, and we need a speed gun. Anyone got a radar gun or something I could borrow this weekend?

    Thanks guys

A stopwatch and some math should work. I can't see how any kid project would require such a pricy piece of equipment. Or even a couple of phones with timestamps for video.

There are speedgun apps too, along with gps speedometers.

I’ve got one of these. It may work for you depending on what you need.

^^^ sick, that might work. we are going to be measuring top speed of an rc car. well be adjusting gearing to find the fastest top speed and where motor temps stay below 180f.

well be using this car, it is 15-20lb object.
We expect to see speeds ranging from 40mph to 70mph on a straight stretch of road out by the warehouses.
We've contemplated using my watch or my bike computer to grab speed via GPS, but I don't want to wreck those things.
We have a small handheld infrared temp gauge.

Now that I think about it, a watch type gps sensor might work better than a speed gun or radar setup because we will run the car back and forth on the set distance until we see the temp stabilize on the motor. If the motor passes 180f, then we will stop the run and cool off. Watch will automotally log top speed for each run. Ok. Click image for larger version.

I just tested it with my son’s rc car and couldn’t get a reading. His car is smaller and slower than yours though, so if you want to try it you’re more than welcome.

OP velocity=change of position as a function of time

Speed=distance/time Measure out a speed trap. Or get a surveyor to measure one with an edm or static gps. Or go some place this has already been done, like a couple property pins you know the distance to 0.01' along a road.

Timers are cheap enough to make, and there are a lot of different approaches one could take for a speed trap.

A big chunk of the science of statistics is involved with the fact that there is no such thing as a perfect measurement of anything. Tldr of this is that measurements of something like speed are rendered much more precise if one repeats measurements as many times as is practicable, then finding the standard deviation, rms, mean, average, or some other appropriate statistical function that measures how well you measured the original values.

This thing will likely wreck more than once tomorrow at high speed. I use my phone for work and other things, I need my phone. Not strapping that sucker in the car.
Advanced speed detection technology has been procured.
We will use a GPS watch tightly strapped in as a secondary speed measurement device.

The old body was cut up to provide panels for reinforcement in the front fenders to improve rigidity in the areas that were massively cracked, and a windshield was installed to reduce drag.
