Rounding out the quiver (80-90mm)?
6'3", 220#, like stiffer skis, I have bros and explosives (190), ski mostly Tahoe and Mammoth. My G-41's have given up the ghost and now I have a gap in the 80-90mm range. Any recomendations on something for the hardpack/carver side of the quiver?
Stop bitching and ski the explosives on hardpack/ice?
Skis under 90mm are for racers?
Take it to epic? When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back. GET MAD! I DON'T WANT YOUR DAMN LEMONS! WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THESE?! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that's gonna BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN!

I am very pleased with my Head Monster im85, last years model. I have freerides on them which make me a little leary about really carving them on had pack, but I think with regular alpine binders they would really rock.

08-31-2005, 10:34 AM #3Me: 6'0", 190#, like softer skis in softer snow, stiffer skis in harder snow. My favorite hardpack & consolidated-crud ski is a Volant Sin (81mm waist), which should be pretty cheap if you can still find it (2-3 years old now, should be like $150-200 new in wrapper). Fairly stiff flex; doesn't float well in powder, but that's what other skis are for. Rails on hardpack and cuts right through the chunky consolidated junk (3-4 day post-storm crud). Downside: kinda heavy, reputation for delaminating, but no problems with mine yet.

Skied head 85 couple season ago. True, rails very well, but sucks on steep due to the sidecut.Sucks soooo badly that i got rid of ´em fast.
Heard raves about the Stöckli Stormrider XL, like the thin version of DP.
Some other considerations might be some race room sticks, they just usually are quite narrow and one minded for your purposes, eh?
But the choices aint that numerous, Metron B5s are fun but a bit gat.
Rossi RPM 100 are fun too, but even more gat.
Mantis 777s are fun but not perhaps sturdy enough.
Scotts?
Maybe some MoJos or like? Personally didnt like them, quite good in everything but didnt shine in anything. But some people love ´em.
The floggings will continue until morale improves.

08-31-2005, 12:20 PM #7What problems have you had?Mantis 777s are fun but not perhaps sturdy enough.
I put about 20 days on mine last year, 50/50 resort and touring with some pretty good rock hits and saw zero damage. A few times, I was expecting core shots and was pleasantly surprised by the bases and edges.
I found them just as capable in crud, similar in powder and much nicer on hardpack compared to my explosivs. I'd say a pretty good choice for the 80-90mm range if you like the exploders.

But i would not put them in the ManlySki TM category, in wich many users on this board like to have their skis served.

08-31-2005, 02:12 PM #13You really should have seen the IFSA competitors throwing down on this ski last year. The 192 is burl for sure. I would be happy to have a pair of these as western ice skates.

Ski Trab FreeRando. Best performing mid-fat available from the true carbon fiber ski pioneers. No 23% delam rates, no breakage issues. Just solid all around performance from the world leader in mountaineering skis.
108-78-93, 1290g. Torsion box construction using carbon reinforced quadraxial glass provides torsional stiffness yet leaves the ski longitudinally soft, resulting in responsive handling and great float. The high density sintered race base has better glide and durability than standard sintered bases. 62 HRC edges with rubber dampening strips provide a smooth ride with excellent edge hold. The ski noticeably outperforms skis 10mm wider in both pow & mank.
Tremper bought 2 pairs, so has Eric Stall. According to backcountry mag "the best guide/light ski I have found. Fun in the bumps, stable in the crud" & "stable, stiff, lightweight". It also garnered the top scores at FreeRide Utah's ski test at Snowbird. Excellent performance in all conditions. Randogear.com & Bentgate.com will both carry the skis next season (Randogear has already sold out, however they're ordering more from Trab). So will Wasatch Touring (UT), Chain Reaction Sports (AK) & Backwoods Mtn Sports (ID).Last edited by tele mark; 08-31-2005 at 03:48 PM.

If you can't find the R:EX, get the TM:X (same ski, slightly different shovel design, different color). The new TM:X is the Kongur (or something). The R:EX lives on.

The new Dynafit Freeride Carbon 10.0. 88mm waist, 2750 g weight, outskis most skis its size and some that are twice the price.
