Master-piece of shit ya ask me...but that's why I began with, "In my opinion".

So, if you accept this, as you should, than Brian Wilson is one of the most important composer / musicians of the past 50 years, because Lennon - McCartney were listening closely to every note Wilson and the boys were producing in the sixties, and following it up with their own. Sgt. Peppers was made after the boys heard Pet Sounds. Direct result.
Yeah, he looks bad - if he wasn't worth so much to some people, he would have wound up in a cardboard box on Second Ave babbling about duece coupes or sumthin'. He's sick. Medicated. But I find him much more fascinating to watch than fucking Jagger or Crosby or Townsend or some other wasted old fucker from that time just mailing it in and collecting a check. He's like a little 10 year old lost in the woods. I saw him about 6 years ago at Jones Beach, and it was strange. He seemed uncomfortable at first, but didn't screw up, and warmed up nicely (someone is producing his show well - it isn't him. Nice band, great sound).
Hey, I'm not a huge fan or anything. Don't play him a lot anymore. But I think he has the potential to actually make a new song that is different than anything he's done before, with really good vocals. That's fine with me. Better than 90% of anything new today.
I'm actually going to see him tomorrow night. I'll report back. Could be great, could suck. Free tickets, at least.

08-14-2005, 11:39 PM #54I'm sorry, but that is truly ignorant on a level that is almost hard to comprehend,& way beyond an opinion. How can you compare the musical genius of the Beatles with pretty boy singers that can't play one insyrumant much less several, don't write music & don't even really sing.

08-15-2005, 12:11 AM #55So he introduced God only Knows last night by saying it was one of McCartney's favorite songs.

Where do you hear that anymore? Started out an oldies show, intermission, than he performed the Smile album for an hour. I don't think he's making big bucks at this. Not a huge crowd.
It's pretty obvious at this point that he is a genius. He belongs in Vegas where a patron casino owner can accommodate him and his big band. He looks like travel is not his gig. He did write In My Room.
It's nice to see good musicians assembled like that. Doesn't happen much in the world of pop music.Last edited by Benny Profane; 08-15-2005 at 08:46 AM.

Let the flaming begin!
-The Doors. Weak keyboard rock fronted by a hippy Sinatra wannabe. I totally respect John Densmore for not letting the songs be used in commercials, though, despite being offered untold millions. The man has my respect even if I don't like the music.
-Phish. Frank Zappa for dumb hippies. "Look at US! We're CLEVER!"
-Frank Zappa. I don't really hate his music, but the fact that every annoying Objectivist I meet seems to revere him as a genius makes me dislike it by proxy.
-Guns and Roses. Axl sounds whiny and petulant to me.
-Stevie Ray Vaughan. Blues licks recycled so many times that the paint's worn off. What's the point?
-The Eagles. I'm sick of every single one of their songs, even the ones I haven't heard.
(Edited: John Densmore is the one who won't let the Doors' music be used in commercials, not Ray Manzarek.)Last edited by Spats; 12-06-2005 at 02:41 AM.

There's a good one.... The Band. Spare me.
Elvis - the people whose songs he sang or was paid to imitate were great, but he himself was a semitalented hack. Never wrote his own music.
Jackson 5
Springsteen
Bon Jovi/Motley Crue/Great White etc. (any Hair "Metal" - ugh)
Any post 70's Rolling Stones
Jefferson Starship (come ON, Grace!! WTF?)
Billy Joel
Elton John (Post-Goodbye Yellow Brick Rd.)
Less "iconic":
Phish
.moe
N. Mississippi Allstars
Good Charlotte
Gov't Mule
Green Day
Red Hot Chili Peppers
.... good God, this list could go on and on.
Led Zeppelin is where the term Heavy Metal came from.... think about it.
"Goth" is actually from the people who followed Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and the Cure around in the 80's.Last edited by Tippster; 08-22-2005 at 03:03 PM.

I'm also not a fan of the Beatles.

Hands down, no question: Grateful Dead. The most over-rated bunch of boring longhairs ever. I wasted so much good stony time javing to put up with them because I couldn't reach over and rip the arm off the turntable. I never got Van Halen at all, either. They almost always ventured into awful territory, and Guns and Roses, oh, awful, awful stuff. Did someone say "The Band?" That would be wrong, although if you just heard them, you'd probably think old hippie shit. If you were to watch "The Last Waltz" (all remastered on DVD now; a Martin Scorcese film, actually), I ga-ron-tee you would have to admit that no one ever did anything like what they did, before or since. And you'd have a drummer who sang a lot. Warren Zevon and Rodney Crowell and John Hiatt and David Lindley (Steve Earle, too, until he descended into his hate Bush / hate America rap) are my personal icons. But since they sold about 36 albums total, they don't rate as icons.

Matisse-Try some different fruit and/or headwear.
Corona-Its shitty Mexican beer. Give me a Dos Equis any day.
Quentin Tarintino-Too odd to be entertaining, too mainstream to be artistic
Harry Potter-Its pure shit. Literary television.
Oak-ugly, crappy wood.
Chopper motorcycles-what the hell is the point of these things? They can't be fun to ride.
Egyptian pyramids-A bunch of slaves were forced to pile up rocks.
Baseball-I understand that we invented it, was it really such a terrific concept?
Tom Petty(someone mentioned earlier)- No good reason, I just don't like himYou look like I need a drink.

Since I have now seen it more than once in this thread.
The term Heavy Metal did not come from Led Zeppelin.
It is from the song "Born to Be Wild" which they did not write.
As far as sucking to the max and being overrated-
Number 1 on my list would be the King of Pop- Michael Jackson."Don't drive angry."
Best quote from the movie "Groundhog Day"
