You can sub the Dead for Phish in your list. (Phish lacked an inner core that the Dead had onstage. After "Wake of the Flood" their albums got weak and the concept only worked onstage.)

Not a Beatles fan either. For me music must convey emotion in some way, shape, or form. I never feel that with the Beatles. To me, they were more about writing catchy and clever lyrics. If I want that shit, I'll read poetry or Friday Morning Haiku threads.
I also don't care for u2 (Some of the most pompous music I can think of, whatever I mean by that) or Nirvana (Same ol' shit from the beginning. Got old in a hurry. Maybe that's why Kirk plugged himself, only way he could evolve.).
Of the new "up&coming" bands, the Decemberists hurl.¡Órale, vato!

You do realize that without the Beatles there probably wouldn't be very many studio-type albums. Not saying that's a good thing or a bad thing, but if you're a Radiohead fan then you better give the Beatles some fucking credit for experimentation (well after the initial teen idol phase).

I don't love U2, but their 80s songs are so iconic that my brain is pretty much wired to enjoy it...

KISS. A good childhood friend was a huge KISS fan and used to play them all the time. I tried so to like them, but I can't. I have most of their CD's (everything from their first album to Hot In The Shade, except the solo's) that I won off the radio and haven't list to any of them and only opened one just to see the cover art. There's something about Paul Stanley's voice that make me think music class should be manditory in school.

I could do without the following 'iconic' artists:
The Doors
The Eagles
Pink Floyd (loved 'em in high school)
Springsteen
and more recently:
Coldplay

You, my friend, are on crack. The list of kickass bands that got their inspiration or had the way paved for them by the Beatles is endless. Love 'em or hate 'em, but at least don't compare them to NKOTB. Personally, I'm not a huge fan, but ya know.

Edit:
Eagles --> Never trust a band w/ a drummer/singer.
U2 --> Any Henry Rollins quote pretty much sums it up.
Led Zeppelin --> Owning and listening to every album constantly for 6 months straight pretty much killed it for me.
AC/DC --> I went to a NASCAR race once w/ a friend. It was entertaining in person, but it still sucks.
Beach Boys --> In my opinion, the most god awful crap ever recorded. You could bring together every shitty boy band from the last ten years for a reunion concert, and it would seem like musical genious compared to those hacks.Last edited by bagtagley; 08-11-2005 at 10:05 PM.

Ok, this is gonna sound weird and may not work for you; but you've gotta listen to the Beatles on Sunday morning.
KLOS in LA used to (maybe still) play the Beatles for an hour or two every Sunday morning. They dubbed it breakfast with the Beatles. I never really got into it when I was down there. Just kinda background music.
Years later when I was working in a record store I somehow started to appreciate the Beatles more. Can't really explain it. It wasn't peer pressure or a change in tastes really. They just kinda grew on me, until one Sunday morning I had an epiphany. Ok, that's a bit strong. But there's just something about the lazy bliss of a Sunday morning and the Beatles that goes together. Try it sometime."I knew in an instant that the three dollars I had spent on wine would not go to waste."

I'll agree about the Beatles, and add..
Kansas (2-3 good songs and everything else sounds the same to me)
U2 (same reason as Kansas)

Lucinda Williams (I've really tried to like her, but she reminds me of Chrissy Hind-BTDT) which leads me to...
The Pretenders
Tom Petty (that was my parents' fault-they played him WAY too much)
Springsteen -ok, there are 2 songs I like, but otherwise anybody can grunt into a microphone and wear tight jeans...
Van Halen (David Lee Roth AND Sammy Hagar- can't stand that music)
Dave Matthews (overplayed I guess)

I'm going to go a different direction and say Pearl Jam. So many people go apeshit over them, but I just don't get it. One or two of thier songs were decent, but most of it is just overated crap.
I liked Nirvana but think they are not quite deserving of as much credit as so many give them.I'm in a band. It's called "Just the Tip."
