Alright the Beatles aren't the ULTIMATE band or anything, but they don't SUCK. I mean most people only hear their pop songs and think they suck. But there are actually a lot of really good songs if you just look beyond their overplayed singles.
They actually show a pretty good rock side that isn't really shown from what most people hear. Delve deep and you'll find some really good stuff.

Ok, as part of my thread necromancy, I'll have to include this one...
Beatles... best band ever? no. But better than I wanted to admit. Any questions? try the Beatles Rock Band game. It kind of drives home how truly great those guys were.
And, more importantly, having played in more than one cover band (not so proud of that...), I can say that they've had more influence than anyone born after their heyday can really understand. That doesn't mean they were the "best" band ever, but they were definitely one of the most "influential" bands ever.
I'll have to admit, the more I listen (especially to Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Let It Be...Naked), the more impressed I find myself. Lennon/McCartney (or v/v, if you're Paul) had knack for writing killer pop songs, but the more I explore their catalog, the more I'm drawn to George Harrison's writing.
Either way, guitar-based rock band pop music would NOT be what it is now (for better or for worse) without the Beatles. Period.
PS - I've always wished I liked Elvis Costello more. A lot of people whose opinions I trust appreciate him very much. I don't get it.
And Steely Dan definitely sucks.

At what age were you kicked in the head by a mule?
Shat of the iconic:
Doors
Radiohead (respect but dislike)
U2 (respect some but dislike)
Bruce (could someone be less talented and command a bigger audience?)
Dylan (LOVE some, rest is ass fissures)
Police (later shit)
Rush
Van Halen
Worth the praise:
Beatles
Stones
Who
Zep
Pink Floyd
Beach Boys
Bowie
Jimi H
To name a few
Obviously, I am objectively correct here. Obviously.

A lot of people don't like Steely. But Elvis Costello? That's a joke. My Aim Is True is amazing and certainly one of the greatest debut records of all time.
And yeah, I know that guy posted 5 years ago.In the long run, we're all dead.- John Maynard Keynes

THE ROLLING STONES ARE THE MOST OVERRATED BAND OF ALL TIME.
They've been around for 6,000 years and they can only manage 2 good songs (Paint it Black and Gimme Shelter)?
CATCHING UP WITH THE ROLLING STONES: U2.
Please just read the lyrics to Vertigo. Please. Then tell me I'm full of shit:
Unos dos tres catorce!
Lights go down, it's dark
The jungle is your head
Can't rule your heart
A feeling is so much stronger than
A thought
Your eyes are wide
And though your soul
It can't be bought
Your mind can wander
Hello hello (Hola!)
I'm at a place called Vertigo
It's everything I wish I didn't know
Except you give me something I can feel, feel
The night is full of holes
As bullets rip the sky
Of ink with gold
They twinkle as the
Boys play rock and roll
They know they can't dance
At least they know.
I can't stand the beats
I'm asking for the cheque
The girl with crimson nails
Has Jesus round her neck
Swinging to the music
Swinging to the music
Oh oh oh oh
Hello hello (Hola!)
I'm at a place called Vertigo
It's everything I wish I didn't know
But you give me something I can feel, feel
Check mated
Oh yeah
Hours of fun
All of this, all of this can be yours
All of this, all of this can be yours
All of this, all of this can be yours
Just give me what I want and no-one gets hurt.
Hello hello
We're at a place called Vertigo
Lights go down and all I know
Is that you give me something
I can feel your love teaching me how
Your love is teaching me how, how to kneel
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

Well, if you forgive Elvis his voice that might be true (one of the greatest?). I'd put Steely well above Elvis, actually (and they're obviously 10x the musicians he is, as I'm sure he'd admit).
And simply by virtue of how many other iconic bands they've influenced it's impossible to say anything (well, much of anything) negative about The Beatles. It's the popular music equivalent of dissing Beethoven or Charlie Parker.[quote][//quote]

When did Steely and E. Costello become noteworthy enough to bother arguing about? Maybe I just run in the right circles, but I don't think I know anyone who gives two shits about either of them - they both suck.
And late Beatles = great. Early Beatles = teeny bopper crap.
Most bands dry out and start to suck. The Beatles were the complete opposite; sucked til they found acid.
