PSA Nice deal on a great ski vise

These are hard to find on sale so this is a nice price.

I have this one, you may need to raise the middle clamp on a 1 inch thick piece of wood for less cambered skis (damn euros)

Probably for Tech Talk, but just in case ... I have an older one that doesn't work with wider skis. Does anyone have a mod for this (maybe Ski Man)?

I have the Swix-branded one, great vise other than having to shim the center like CB said, and the end supports not lining up with the vise very well (depending on ski width). Probably the best one available though.

This is a great deal on a professional quality vise.

I was wondering that too. I have an older, narrow version too.

The screw part looks as if it's held in place with a circlip, but the guide rods appear to be pressed in. I'm going to ask my machinist.

One problem I forgot about, is that we have so many sloped sidewall skis which slip. The solution is to make "dummy" boot soles, clip them into the bindings, and grab the skis by them. What A PITA, and that's not even considering tech bindings.

I have a skinny vise, use the two end clamps for sideways clamping and edge work.

For flat mounting waxing and base work, I think the bungee clamp systems work better and are cheaper.
Plus the bungee systems can mount 2 skis at once if you have wide enough side platforms. I keep meaning to make some up so I can wax 2 at a time.

    check slidewright for them

After the sloped sidewall issue (before width was an issue). I picked up a lasso clamp from Terry (Slidewright). He advised me to save my money and get one from the onset, but I didn't listen.

I've been using the lasso clamp for over ten years.

Seeing this thread, and my unloved vice, I was reminded that when I'm wailing on a new pair of skis to level the bases, the lasso clamp isn't as stable as a good ol' fashioned vice.

    Mine was branded Maplus, BTW.

I'm not familiar with bungee clamps. They sound like a variant of lasso clamps.

I just put the center clamp on the binding toe piece and not the sidewall, no need for a shim.
Move upside and let the man go through...

JayPowHound wrote up a thread for this several years ago, and I added my own twist to it a couple years ago as well using the original lead screw and handle.

A sensible and straightforward mod by JayPowHound!

Thanks for digging it up. I missed it in my search.

I never thought of this. Doh! It's too obvious - maybe not as effective for tech bindings, however.

Works fine on tech binders too, been doing it with 120mm skis mounted with dynafits for years. Just close the jaws on the toe piece before clamping down and make sure the center clamp has a solid bite on both sides.
