Already a shit storm rising over this with threats of Trumptards undoing it (though it won't be easy.)
Glad to see it got done. I am familiar with the Bear Ears area, but less with the Golden Butt, but hey, we need to preserve all bits of anatomy.

I haven't looked into it yet but I think this means that mt bikers lost a lot of territory to be able to ride in. The other thing that happened the other day was better, new Wilderness B designation starting to be implemented, the B stands for bikes included.

I don't think there was much rideable in the Bears Ears area.

Not necessarily. A management plan will now be prepared for the area, and it's up to their discretion where they ultimately will and won't allow bikes. The proposed Boulder-White Clouds NM would have maintained bike access. That's why people were so pissed when the Wilderness designation happened instead.
Whoa, details?
There's certainly very little on Trailforks or MTBProject. There are a couple trails west of Monticello that look intriguing, most notably the Spring Creek-Robertson Pasture loop in the Abajos, but I don't know if they're even in the NM boundary. Who knows what there might be if you start digging into old USGS quads though.
edit: Found this, a little beta and a good read overall: http://www.takepart.com/feature/2016...ional-monument
"The hiking was spectacular—from deep canyons to wide vistas to exceptional historical sites—and we rarely saw another human. As for mountain biking, Wilder notes, “There’s very little singletrack, and what exists is quite challenging. On the other hand, if you don’t mind gravel-grinding on dirt roads, you can cover a lot of beautiful scenery.” We found many of the routes nearly impossible to bike."Last edited by Dantheman; 12-29-2016 at 02:41 PM.

I've spent a fair amount of time out there and never wished for my bike, but I'm sure there could be some decent rides.
What's kinda cool is that the official announcement mentions the historical use of the area by canyoneers and climbers. I don't think we will see any restrictions there.

This is also a bit unusually in that it was pushed for by the Hopi, Zuni and Navajo nations and will be co-managed by NPS and native control.
Oh, and fuck Jason Chaffetz , that guy is creepy.

Great news, but on the flip side somewhat secret places will turn into official trails/parking lots/bathrooms on maps, new camping restrictions will probably be established, etc. which will be a big bummer. And some cool ruins will probably become closed to the public.
Man, I gotta get back down there this summer/spring.

I don't know man, this really didn't happen in the past 20 years at GSENM. I think the remoteness and ruggedness of the area will still keep the crowds down. Maybe a few of the already busier areas (Grand Gulch, The Black Hole, etc.) will see more use, but I bet you will still be able to disappear for few days and not see a soul.

Right, it will never be packed, but the unmarked trails and ruins are something special. I'm not worried it will be crowded, I'm bummed about marking too many things. Could all be managed just fine though, we will see. I'll stay optimistic.

Is lyman your bishop?
Not to belittle your concerns.... but of all the hundreds if not thousands of square miles you can roost to your hearts content in Utardland you are bent you cant go roost around bears ears? (That is assuming you cant, I see plenty of moto action in GSENM but its just on roads and established trails). Why be socialistic about your roosting needs? The murican thing to do would be buy some land and build/do whatever the actual fuck it is you wanna do on it. At least be pissed about jobs that would never be there to begin with, or drillen for oil, not being able to develop that parcel of land with a great view to sell for profit or the fact them damn drunk injuns actually get a say in something the directly effects the history and lineage. You know standard white privileged greediness. How could you possibly get rich, or get your fellow ward members rich, riden bikes in that wasteland
Fyi I own dirtbikes...Last edited by TheFugitive; 01-02-2017 at 04:03 PM.
