TR: Powder Day on the Equator

There is one place on the Equator with a regular snowpack: Cayambe, Ecuador. The glaciated volcano is just a hair shy of 19,000'. It gets plenty of snow, but getting after it is no mean feat: the equatorial sun fries any powder within an hour of sunrise.

Today we made it just in time.

It snowed down to the hut but not enough to ski on. We hiked from the hut at 15,000' to the base of the glacier at 16,000' and stashed our skis and mountaineering gear there, so we carried light packs on the first hour up. The descent was a continuous 3,000' -- no down climbing or crevasse crossings or anything, just careful navigation and sick turns.
