Nothing wrong with Salmon Arm or any of the southern Shuswap and Okanagan, property prices can be a little higher than the OP specified.
As for the central interior west of the Cariboos, it's beautiful country to me. The Quesnel highlands have a few very cool small towns - Likely, Horesefly and Wells with larger centres along Hwy 95. Getting into the Cariboos alpine Can be a bit of work, though. Amazing access to any outdoor recreation, but away from regional airport access and trauma centre hospitals.
North of Hwy 16 to Topley, you're a bit away from larger expanses of alpine, but there's good ridge tree skiing. Go bit further into the boonies to Germanson Landing and get 3m or more average snowpack at bottom end of the Omineca Mtns.

If you google : "BC front counter google earth" you can download a google earth plug in that provides an overlay with all the land tenures, private lands, commercial, Indian, mines, parks, water etc. basically a map for everything. I believe they have an ipad specific version too but I've never looked at it.
As for "ski out your front door for 150k" I think that really narrows the search down. Depending on how literally you take that. If I was in the market I would go with the trout lake/meadow creek area.
There is a 20+ acre site on a maintained road near Galena Bay for $70K that looks like nice. The dream property would be the 160 acre site with incomplete cabin next to the CMH galena lodge for $300, comes with the rope tow from the original Reverstoke ski hill.

That my friend is gold! Thank you. I wonder if 160 acres is really enough for your own little hill - access ot the tenure beside not withstanding, I guess it depends on the terrain. I could see buying a few hundred acres of terrible to build on, great to ski on mountain land and installing a row tow or two with some basic living at the bottom....

Speaking of private ski hills, anyone have the video of the guys on Vancouver Island that rigged up some old logging gear to make their own lift? It was linked on here a few years back. I think they wore a climbing harness and hung of the cable. I recall a spot where the guys was dangling 20-30 feet off the ground.

What kind of building codes are there in BC? If one were to acquire one of these lots that are being discussed, could you just put together a relatively inexpensive, minimalist structure with a pit toilet? Or are there codes that require something more elaborate?

I certainly am no expert on building codes. What I do know is they take them serious on rural properties.
We have a boat access only property on the north end of Kootenay lake. A neighbor started building a "castle watch tower" on his property, It was 3 stories high, and made of concrete and stacked granite. He did this without any building permits and the inspector shut him down. They ended up blowing the structure up with explosives and using a barge to remove the remains.
I do think you'd be fine with something minimalist if it wasn't considered a permanent structure, like a yurt or something.
The biggest issue with a remote rural property is that if you don't have lots of time, you don't end up using it enough and it ends up being a chore to maintain it. You end up spending more time working then playing.

This X10000. It's taken half our vacation time over the past 5 yrs to bring my wife's little cabin to the point where we don't have any more mandatory work/upgrades and can just sit back and enjoy it if we want. Time now to finally explore the Duffy, Pemberton & Lillooet Lk.

The Trout Lake/Ferguson/Galena area doesn't have any building inspection services yet, so there's no one checking if you're following the BC Building Code. You could build a shack down there and live in it, but I imagine there'd be some pretty serious liability if anything happened and it wasn't build to code. Otherwise, the only way you'd get caught is if you got ratted on by a neighbour.

In our area there is not building code, no permits, no planning etc. I believe some other regional districts are the same. There is registration for septic but doesn't seem to be much feedback to stop you from putting in your own system.

That area would be in Columbia Shuswap area B so I don't think you need to care about building to code, I think that area just has some planning, ok per CSRD you are supposed to follow code but lots of homes don't.
