Kinda like how carfax is used for cars.
This is trying to get there:

FWIW, the one I got was from Cycle Gear, sold as a motorcycle lock, comes with a large padlock. $35 - much cheaper than the chains sold as bicycle locks. 6 foot length should be enough to loop around 2-3 bikes, and will run a cable lock through the wheels too.

I bought one of those too, after seeing it recommended in another thread. Looks to be comparable to the Kryptonite, and much cheaper. It's heavy as hell.

I have friends who lost 4 bikes midday in downtown Portland. The thieves used an angle grinder to cut the NSR off their rig and just took the rack with bikes still locked to it.

Holy wow, I have a way to run a chain through my actual hitch, but that part of the hitch can b defeated by an angle grinder.

    I found this pretty interesting/educational:

    Also look at this:

There are GPS trackers with cell capability (requires subscription) - those seem like the best bet going forward. If I had to lock my bike outdoors somewhere like SF I'd be looking at those (or would just ride a beater I didn't care about).

We had to shop around for insurance when we quoted the value of our bikes. The one we started on had this idea that a high value bike was $2000. We are in NZ.

I think bait bikes are the way to go. They caught a uhaul full of stolen bikes a few years ago on the sea to sky. It just feels like an ongoing bait bike program would deter thieves.

I always wondered if you could build a bottom bracket or a hub with a key to lock and unlock it. Still, bikes can be picked up and stolen and stripped.
