    Hard Drive eraser

Just got a new laptop. What's the best program (free/cheap) to completely wipe my old hard drive? Thanks

tele.savalas decided to check back in for computer advice. Do you still tele? hope so.

Just hand it in to your local sheriffs dept, they take care of this kind of thing for free.

    wiping for personal reuse?

    Format it

wiping for destruction of information that needs to never surface again?

    Format it, then shred it

I've concluded that DJSapp was never DJSapp, and Not DJSapp is also not DJSapp, so that means he's telling the truth now and he was lying before.

    hard drives are cheap,
    destroy it.
Melt it down if you can. If not, a good drill press and a little time can make it pretty unreadable.

DBAN as mentioned is a free for the download and burn to CDR, then do the DOD or multiple times (10) if you are really going to sell or send it off to be recycled.

Reformat can be undone and data recovered very easily with the right utility. Really need to overwrite the original information multiple times and then even with that a really good recovery expert can still get the info back if they want it.

    Dban is good.
You can also get a magnet if you don't need to use the drive ever again.
Mallets are good. Watch the bounce.
    Look up a degausing machine
    No longer stuck.
