My lay persons perspective is there is quite a bit more traffic, and the skill level of the average skier is much less. That said, if they don't put me at risk, who cares. Used gear is becoming more available and I still can find lots of good lines. The increase in traffic could help if there is an emergency. If I want it to myself, I still have thousands of acres I can access with a bit longer drive.

In the not too distant past, wearing a pack at the ski area garnered unwanted attention from patrol. That sure has changed.

I know several shops that sell Dukes/Guardians/Adrenalines, but don't sell climbing skins or beacons/shovels/probes. My personal estimate is that only 10 percent of Duke owners own skins.

As in before 1993? Been wearing a pack since then and never had any issues.

back 20 years ago when i first started going into the backcountry i would come across other bc skiers 10% of the time. Now it's 80% of the time and the gear today makes it so much easier.

I know a girl (dentist) who bought all the gear, head to toe, dynafit skis boots bindings, all new ski clothes, beacon shovel probe. everything. Then went skinning up the ski area a few times before someone told her that her heels would release.

Yeah, more or less depending on where you were at.

Going into the 90's, wearing a pack or touring gear made you a marked man at a lot of ski areas. By the end of the decade, it just made you part of the herd.

The death of the backcountry has already happened. Every Joey and his brother are out there.

    Thanks Rog.
