Baby bear - I defer to the quick TGR-ing skills of my amigo Schralph, but as my better half is also due an upgrade to something just like this, may I ask your height? She is currently on a small size, lady-specific Marin frame that is short for her at 5'4". I know about as much about women's bike sizing as I do about women in general, which is not bloody much.

Hey mogul at first guess Medium seems too big for your wife @ 5' 4" unless she has unique geometry (high ape index or really long legs/short torso). We can get her on my girlfriend's medium hardtail as a sizing proxy which has a slightly shorter reach dimension and standover dimension than similar medium mens frames. If you send me the model info of her current bike we can look at the geometry together and compare that to other bikes. Some manufacturers like Giant and Trek do change frame geo for women's specific models, others do not. Ibis and Santa Cruz don't change frame geo for women's specific models.

Once you've sat her in a test bike then you can look at standover height, stack, and reach dimensions of any frame geometry you're looking at as an easy comparison. We can use that as a proxy for other frame sizing estimates. All of the other stuff (saddle, stem, bars, crank) can be adjusted relatively easily ... crank length @ 170 is probably about right, bar width between 660-700 is probably fine (stem dependent), and you can get low profile grips that are more enjoyable for small hands. I also might have a couple extra stems lying around for trying out different fits.

Edit: Hank and Frank in Lafayette is close to you and they have a good sampling of bikes with various dimensions ...

I'm 5'7" - I think she would probably be better on the small ibis frame -

Schralph you da man. Hank and frank is my go to shop but I feel bad show rooming them and then buying second hand stuff. I have no such qualms about exploiting my friendship with you for similar ends, however, so cmon over and I'll supply the booze! Nice pickup on this bike btw.
