2016 Points North Heli Conditions - Our side of the Chugach
Almost 4 weeks into our season now and just waiting for others to open. The Chugach is is prime shape and we have had it all by ourselves...
We have skied virtually our entire zone over the past 4 weeks and we are finding very good snow with stable conditions. We are dealing with a surface hoar layer between 30-90cm's down depending on location but its non reactive. We have over a dozen quality days now in the can with over 1000 runs skied to date so our beta is pretty solid.
We just finished up the second week of the HSUS Mechanized Guide School. Students spent there first week at WPG in the Wasatch prior to arriving in AK here at PNH. All said and done, students received 8 heli days over the two weeks and gained a huge amount of knowledge and first hand experience.
Of note, the PNH Tour Camp Guides, Brennan Leggasse, Jeff Dostie and Wes Thompson put up the first ever ascent of the mighty Sphinx this past week. Big props to those boys. There are not to many firsts left in the Chugach.
I will keep this post short and catch up on the photos here from the past weeks. Maybe we will see here soon. Its about as good as it gets...

Cordova is my favorite town in AK. From the first time I pulled up to the dock I knew it was special. Someday I'll fly with you guys. And if you're ever trying to do a kings and corn type scenario with fishing and skiing I know an awesome fishing guide

Clouds moved in today after a good stretch of skiing again. Conditions have been very good. Not excellent, but very very good. Temps warmed up this week, testing our snowpack and still allowed us to find good cold snow. Just not the "blower" we like however, these pictures will leave you thinking what does blower look like if were not content with these conditions. More snow on the way and a new coat of paint for the zone is inbound for a day or two. Stay fired up.
These pictures were taking from our clients this week. Many whom are on this forum. Florian?

Too say we need a reset around here now would be an understatement. WInd, rain and warm temps to 8000' have destroyed our snowpack in the zone. Of course we are 1 reset from greatness and the temps do appear to be dropping, the week ahead at least looks promising. I did a 60 miles radius flight yesterday and all aspects up to 6000' had either slide, refroze or just looked terrible. Needless to say for safety concerns, we chose to not ski our guests yesterday. Had we skied I am betting that we would of had multiple knee injuries. Yesterday Anchorage hit an all time record high of 53 degrees in March. Downtown Haines was 53, Cordova hit 52 as did Valdez. It was even warmer at 3000'. Again, we are only one storm away from this changing.
Here are a few pics from last week when it was cold. These are low angle shots as we had jsut received around 6 feet of new snow. We were playing it very safe.

The Chugach has been back in action this past week! Temps went back to normal and the cold snow has returned! Today is a big change over as we drop into our final week of the season. Blue skies are forecasted for the next few days. Closing week is shaping up to be a good one. Heres a few photos from this week and the Warren Miller crew getting after it.

The Chugach just keeps on giving. Yesterday, 5 year old Kinley made her first ever turns in the Chugach while Ryland Bell and Morgan Hebert shooting for Warren Miller claimed it to be there very best heli day filming ever! Current forecast is continued blue bird here for our closing week of 2016. Stay tuned for more...

Thats a wrap here at PNH for 2016! What a great season we had. The Chugach delivered once again this year and we are already fired up for 2017.
Re-cap- the 1st, 5 weeks were very very good. Weeks 6 and 7 saw unseasonably warm weather statewide leaving most operators wondering whats in store for the remainder. Weeks 8 and 9 the zone turned back on with epic conditions bringing the Chugach back to life. We finished with 5 big days to close out the 2016 season. Thanks to all of our loyal guests, staff and sponsors! Thanks for following along here. See ya next year! Here are a few photos from our closing week here.

My last two seasons at Points North. Definitely my best days on snow ever. Thanks Quinner for the opportunity & the friendship. Crossing my fingers for next season.
