Interesting counter point.
I think it's worth it to expose the 3rd world exploitation.. but if I were that level athlete I'd probably be closer to this side of the spectrum.

American rowers have special anti-microbial suits. Multiple suits for training and racing so they don't have to wear the same suit twice. They plan to bleach their oars in between use. They also protect the mouth piece of their water bottles.

I do think it's funny how her piece ends with a call to dump money into LA's 2024 Olympic bid... Because if we care so much about athletes we'd protect them by supporting holding them here.
Which tells me she misses the point; I think most people are finally coming around to the "it's all a corrupt debacle" view, no matter where the thing gets hosted. This one just has more visible symptoms.

there was a nice piece on PBS about the Nazi games and about how a lot of what is standard about modern Olympics--bigger and more expensive facilities every Olympiad, the torch relay, the athletes marching into the stadium (extending the Olympic salute which happens to be the same as the Nazi salute), the overall spectacle, and sport as a surrogate for war (shortly to be followed by the real thing) was invented by the Nazis. Also about how there was a strong movement in the US to boycott the games because of the Nazis' treatment of Jews and others, which was countered in overtly anit-Semitic terms by the head of the USOC, Avery Brundage, who also toured Berlin and came back telling the country that the Jews were being treated just fine.

I do hope all the athletes have a great time and are able to compete without catching a disease or get injured. It's just too easy to poke fun at these games, and it's only getting worse with all the corruption, waste, unpreparedness; it's the modern trend ... Can't wait!

You just can't make this stuff up:
http://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_...ing-ceremonies
RIO DE JANEIRO -- With fireworks forming the word "Rio" in the sky, hip-wiggling dancers and Gisele Bundchen shimmering to the tune of the "Girl from Ipanema," Rio de Janiero welcomed the world to the first Olympic Games in South America with a serious message: Let's take better care of our planet.
Here's hoping Seu Jorge is part of the games with some Bowie.

Team USA is a 50 point favorite against China. O/U is 171.5. Want to bet on team USA (men) to win the gold? Odds are 1:40. Doesnt really seem like smart money that bet there.. Spain is 2nd at 15:1
Of course its cool to gamble on the Olympics!! what else are you gonna gamble on in the middle of summer???
I'm curious what the odds were on seeing Gisele's camel toe in that dress as she walked across the stadium.. there was a collective DAAAAAAAMN from the crowd I was watching with when she started her walk

Enjoyed the opening ceremonies. The urban quality, the mention of Brazil's slave trading legacy, as well as the focus on climate change was pretty cool (no pun intended). Almost seems strange seeing the Olympics tackle actual issues.
