Tinemaha with whatsupdoc and two non-mags.

T-haha is on the left, Birch on the right.

    Another early start.

Skinned the first quarter and then booted the rest in fairly supportable snow.

If you want Split, be prepared for some mixed climbing.

    How you doing?

    CJ skis tasty corn.

This mountain is rad. BJ makes a tele turn.

    Big mountain.

    CJ

    whatsupdoc

Shocker: There was actually cold, wintery snow on the northern aspects.

    Skiing is fun.

Postholing and shwacking through sage is a different kind of fun. Although there wasn't much on this tour.

I love a good postgame session. It was 81 degrees in big pine.

Looking forward to whatsupdoc's next TR. (Dude is killing it.)

Some pics from 3 recent days on the east side:

Friday we went to Mt. Gibbs looking for corn.

We ascended the E face and cloud cover kept it from softening. We hung out on top about an hour and worked our way over to the SE chute, happy to find it in great corn. Dropped about 11:15. Skiing the SE chute:

Day 3 was Monday and weather looked iffy with winds and cloud cover. Went to Slide Mountain near Big Pine looking for corn. The SE gully had excellent corn. Above the top of the gully, the winds were nuking and the upper bowl was not going to soften, so we just skied the gully and called it a day.

This is pretty cool: Free online National Geographic Topos.

I used to buy their sets of software CDs to print out topos.

big favor to ask.... my wife and I are taking a spur of the moment trip from the PacNW down to the Eastside next week. We've hiked the JMT and SHR before but never toured in the Sierras and we'll only have 4-5 days. Going through the guidebooks and staring at this thread and others, I feel like there are too many options to even begin to absorb and come up with a to-do list.
If anyone was willing to point me towards what would be considered classic tours/straightforward ski mtneering objectives one should not miss on a Sierras trip, I'd really appreciate it. Enjoying some good scenery on a handful of day tours is more important to us than getting on anything crazy steep. Feel free to message me if you've got a recommendation or two. thanks.

Honestly, there's so much good stuff in the Eastern Sierra, I wouldn't worry too much about classic lines/tours. I've skied unnamed lines that are literally right next to named "classics" that I've found to be better than the classics themselves. While pretty much anything considered a classic is going to be good or even great, I tend to think they mainly got their status a little more based on popularity than quality.

In terms of bang-for-your-buck roadside attractions, you'll find a lot between Lee Vining and June Lake, in Convict Canyon, and basically between McGee and South Lake (I assume you have the guidebook and make sense of these references). The stuff further south is awesome, but it's a little bigger and wilder, and the road-side attractions are either less prevalent or at least less documented.

Follow ESAC (the daily observations can be very helpful) and make your choices based on weather and conditions. The Rakkup App for the guidebook is great too, even if you already have the book.

Coming from Tahoe, I generally avoid the stuff right out of Mammoth Lakes like the Sherwins and the Crest. There's plenty of great, convenient skiing there. But it's more similar to the stuff around Tahoe, which I can ski anytime.

yup, got a guidebook that I'm quickly trying to get through...just a little overwhelmed by all the options and the limited time we'll have. thanks for the recommendations on the best bang for your buck destinations.

    Eastside Conditions Thread

With 4-5 days, either hit roadside attractions, plan for a few single overnights or plan for one multiday. It's good to have backup ideas if the weather does not cooperate. One semi popular idea (for good reason) is to car camp in the buttermilk area (outside of bishop) and tick off some of the bigger peaks in the front side area as single day adventures.

Try Virginia Lakes , Gibbs, Magee Creek, and Buttermilk Road out of Bishop. You can go as far south as Onion Valley ( Independence) . Its all to the west and will be in your face. Also Big Pine Creek drainage . Unlike the PNW its all desert scrub south of Mammoth so you don't have trees blocking your view and it will be pretty straitforward.

I read that as of a few weeks ago the upper portion of Buttermilk Rd is a bit of a mess and has a soft closure on it. Anyone know if thats still the case or can one get a regular-clearance car close enough to snowline to do tours out of that road? Just wondering if a high-clearance 4x4 is needed for a lot of the forest service rd access this time of year. thanks.

I'm guessing the upper portion of Buttermilk Road is going to be a mess this year (huge ruts, big creek crossings, deep snow drifts) after the massive snow and rain events. I don't think even a high clearance 4x4 is going to get very far up it until May. So the stuff up there (Wahoo, etc.) is going to require a long-ass approach. That said, there are a couple options below: Basin is an excellent ski with a ton of options beyond the obvious East Couloir and the Buttermilks are a very scenic place to camp. (Bring bouldering gear if you have it, of course.) Never done the southern side of Tom, but I'm sure it's fantastic.

I'd also recommend at least a day or so in Convict Canyon. It's very scenic, super convenient, has a big mountain feel in every direction, and there are a ton of options from mellow to gnar. It's also directly across from a number of natural hot springs, which is definitely a part of the Eastern Sierra experience you should try at least once.

Damn, forgot about Convict. You can keep yourself busy there as stated for days.
Virginia Lakes road is paved, usually plowed and will get you close to some fun stuff.
Glacier Lodge road out of Big Pine will do the same except you have about a 1-2 mile hike in on a road.
Out of Independence is Onion Valley road and that will get you to 9400 feet. All paved. If you see road closed signs these are treated as soft closures and you wont be hassled if you go around the sign unless you screw up and get stuck or injured
Eight miles south of Bishop is Keough Hot Springs if you want a shower and a hot swimming pool and hot tub. They also have a campground there.
Those last two are too far south to be in most guide books but do offer great tours and easy access
Google Earth is good. Anything west of Highway 395 between Bridgeport to Independence is worth cheking out on the web

Here's today shot west of Bishop

Mt Wood north of June Lake would be a good option, but as said, there are an unlimited number of lines, so the best bet is to just choose what is skiing best based on current conditions.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...
